I'll put a Nissan up against any German car especially VW's "8" days a week.
Have seen lots of trouble though the years with VW. But have a 1987 Civic Si with over 260,000 miles that has not given me a single problem. My wife's 2010 Rav 4 V6 has been great so far, but it has an extended warranty just in case.
Also have a 1994 Suzuki Sidekick with around 150,000 miles. It broke down during the winter (won't start), so I will have to look at the fuel pump, and maybe timing belt when I have the time. Meanwhile I drive a very rusty 1981 F-150 around 2,000 miles each year. Replaced the motor a few years ago, and the new one has around 20,000 miles. Only drive this one during moose season, and salmon fishing during the summer. It has so much body rust that I don't want some people to see me driving it, but it never lets me down
Almost forgot: just bought a 1988 GMC K-1500 4x4 with a "from the ground-up rebuilt motor" by a local shop. The motor has around 6K miles, but I have to take it to a shop to have the front axle pinion seal, and also the axle shafts' seals replaced. Lots of custom work on this truck (headers, pipes, LED lights all around, Monster cables and fuse installed and ready for a premium sound, etc.). Paid $4,500, but will selll it for $6K (somebody waiting for it already). This one I will probably drive maybe 500 miles per year. It's a teenager's dream, and an old fart like me does not look so good in it.
I'll agree with BMW and rank Audi as a close second with Mercedes pulling up 3rd place. I have driven a number of cars from these brands and I just don't understand peoples obsession with them.....
Exactly my point of view! I've driven many different cars and BMW and other Germans are overrated..
Their engines aren't smooth, interiors are not good, average build quality and they have issues with reliability down the road..
And one thing doing 60mph in a BMW feels like 50mph.. I think BMW advanced their speedometers by 5-10mph..
Honestly go drive a V6 Canty and I guarantee you'll be very surprised by how quick it is and how good the engine is.. Velvety smooth & unruffled..

there plenty of cars that are fast or that handle well, but if you start looking for a fast car, that handles well and is comfortable and roomy at the same time, i am sure you cannot go past BMW or Mercedes.
take any SUV for a day and than try X5, it really drives as a sedan.
I went to go see an E350, thinking that E class would at least be snazzy, quality interior, etc.
What a piece of crap. Omg. I was floored.
I also have some friends/colleagues with older MBs (3-5 years old)...they do NOT look good old. The old school 1980s ones do. But these newer ones just seem to fall apart. Awful.

And I've owned over a hundred cars from most major brands around the world and keep coming back to BMW as the best blend of practicality and driving dynamics. If you've driven them as you say, did you drive them in their environment, which is A) twisty backroads, B) high speed autobahn, and C) the track? I've driven them on the road and on the track and there are damn few comfortable sedans that can transition so easily to both.
I've had Hondas, Toyotas, and Nissans, and though they are economical and occasionally reliable, there is a huge difference in ability (and I've driven those makes on the track, too). And they've all had their share of problems and rust.

Nope. They are just designed for speed. 100 feels like 60. Why? because they are that competent.
And speed isn't just about quickness, it's about responsiveness at speed in every situation, like twisty backroads, where teh steering feel in a BMW is MILES ahead of your favorite Camry, which is just a damn pillow on wheels. Might as well be driving your living room couch for all the feedback you get from it. Sorry, THAT"S what being "overrated" is all about. You rate it higher than it is.

Agreed. I recently cross-shopped the "Entry level luxury" area and found that BMW/Mercedes were woefully equipped vs Lexus/Acura. Everything, including a real leather seat was an "option" with the BMW. Furthermore, the BMW's interior looked as if it was from a 1990 BMW, not one from 2012.
I too am gonna have to go with BMW, simply because of their stupid slogan, "the ultimate driving machine." I'm sorry, but in the vast sea of automobiles, anyone who thinks a BMW is the ultimate driving machine is delusional. Are they good drivers, yes, but let's not kid ourselves.
Benz. My uncle was driving his a couple months ago and the front right tire legit just fell off the car. That thing always has something going on with it.
