Mostly NA's said "ugh" when they had to meet the white soldiers and settlers........most of them worked hard but took few baths (except on Saturday)......if you got down wind of them you would've said "ugh" too.

Ever notice how the NA's would raise their hand in greeting? That way they showed you they were peaceful.....no weapon in the hand. The anglos, on the other hand, insist on shaking other peoples hands.......guess they are checking to see what they can make fall out of each others sleeve.

Thanks GP,

Bjb123 and myself are sitting here LOAO reading your discription of the hand shake and the term "augh". So thats why I say that today when ever I'm around some people at the stores.

Thanks for enlightening me on their true meaning.LOL

Hope all goes well for you, but please don't say ugh when you get here. You will have to brush up on your okie vocabulary.
Try saying things like, "dah-aiing, ya'll need ta simmer down."

Here is another 1929 painting by smokey, your story with your grandma reminded me of this painting.
Hope you know the 'ugh' thing was a joke - and I can drawl with the best of them - when I was in MO for a year, they all thought I grew up there LOL All my relatives were from WV, OK, and MO so I have a treasure trove of non-yankee sayings. In fact, I used to work with juveniles (in a prison setting) and they would laugh at me because I said Warshington rather than washington - I mean - come on now - I warsh my face, not wash it LOL Just the way I grew up saying it <g> So Dah-lin' I cain tauwk good too

Good pasture -t hat was sooooo priceless! Yes the NA's were so much cleaner than the whites - between sweat lodges and bathing, they were not the 'dirty savages' that they were portrayed to be. Loved your remarks about the raised hand vs the shaking hands - probably the truth!!
