The welfare class is never going to leave. They can’t get all of the types of free stuff they can get here anywhere else. As miserable it can get here (depressing weather half the year, dilapidated housing, third world infrastructure, so many unhappy looking people, crime, everything expensive yet the service/quality you get is poor, traffic, dirty, noise, etc.) some people have told me they just won’t leave because they won’t be able to get the same level of government benefits elsewhere.
Something to keep in mind is that these are Census estimates. So, when the official Census comes out in 2030, you may see different results. This has been the case for other parts of the state in the last couple of Censuses, where an area may show losses in the estimates in between, but the official Census shows population gains.
The smart money is leaving that’s why the city can’t afford to hire more workers like police and they’re running deficit spending while increasing ways to tax citizens like camera and congestion tolls. These are all taxes that hurt the working class.
Consider the D.C. metro, if you want to reside in a walkable location with very good transit and lots of amenities. The Wharf, https://www.wharfdc.com/ is a great area of the District.
The DC metro area's cost of living is reasonable and the travel time to NYC is under 40 minutes by plane, so it will be very easy to visit friends and family or for them to visit you.
agreed.. i have a home in DC as well and its also about 3.4 to 4 hours driving and even less by train

Southern states have been dealing with it for years.
Let’s see how this plays out.

or the people who thought they had unfettered access to power and could hide behind the badge realize that times are changing and they could get jammed up if they try to do what they would like to do ...
New york is one of those places that people come to seek their fortune.. we will always have people coming here compared to let's say Dublin Ohio!

With all the negativy towards law enforcement that might be the reason in declining in people joining that dept.
Which is crazy given the numerous amounts of law enforcement shows in TV (old and present).
Correction. The city lost 5% of its productive, tax paying population. The welfare class doesn’t leave and keeps growing as a share of NYC residents.
spot on
