Off topic, but it is so weird to notice a post of mine just above and it is from 2014 ! Not being a daily poster, it's weird seeing any of mine but 7 years ago is really digging back here.

Default We've investigated moving to Myrtle Beach- a lot.

We already live in an area voted F for crime. Here in San Diego, California.
Things we've never seen before are happening here now.
Homeless, crazy people either mentally ill or on drugs are sleeping on our streets and pan handling in our shopping areas.

Hubby and I have a new verbal alert that we've never had before. It is "Get the guns".
We are locked and loaded, but God knows it's been many a year since we've ever fired one.
I hate feeling afraid.

For that reason, we will not move to Myrtle Beach.

Crime stats Do matter, no matter what a real estate agent trying to sell you a property says.

One should always do what one feels most comfortable with for one's own needs/safety. What I fail to understand is why it is necessary to announce to the "world" that you will not move to MB. Why not just read the stats, call your agent and tell her/him why you're no longer interested and move on (rhetorical question)?

Maybe this is helpful to you, it lists the top safe areas in the US: https://www.safewise.com/blog/safest-metro-cities/

Also, please try to get to a gun range soon and practice, or maybe go to a class. It will give you much more confidence in that weapon and also prevent you from having a very bad experience with it.

Best of luck to you.

Okay, that post by AugiesMom was interesting. Since most of this thread is quite dated (I went back and read a bit), how is the crime in the area currently? I'm considering (almost definitely) moving to the area in a few years. I expect that there are likely specific areas to stay away from, or certain times of year to stay away from other areas as well. But generally speaking, how is the crime in the area?

To a point in AugiesMoms post, i will be, ahem, prepared. And I practice. So I won't be worried at home, and will likely live in possibly a nicer neighborhood. Considering the property size I'll be looking for I probably won't be in a gated community. And unlike the current communist state of NJ that I currently live, I understand that CCW for a an upstanding citizen is achievable in MB. So I will likely apply when I become a resident, but I don't want to feel like I need that for normal everyday grocery shopping or going out to dinner in my convertible.

We moved here from communist NJ 5 years ago. While there is crime, it’s mostly in the touristy areas very late at night. You won’t need to carry to go grocery shopping or out to dinner. We feel very safe here. Many ex NJ residents here. You should come visit for a week or two & check the area out.

Nothing worse than a fear ridden trigger finger in a warm and welcoming community. Keep searching on the west coast.

I've vacationed in the area probably about 10 or so times over the past 20 years, mostly down for spring or fall rally. But the bug to relocate there is new, and our trip down last fall rally was really the first time we were looking around with interest in living there. Drove around a few neighborhoods, went to a few open houses, talked to locals (mostly transports from NY/NJ), etc. Everybody loved living there and told us we would love it too. Definitely had a few 'seedy' vibes a few times. Down on the strip at an outdoor place having a late bite and a drink, people watching, and the place had a bouncer looking like he was on SWAT. Well when the shady character on the sidewalk tried to make his way in when the bouncer was seemingly busy chatting with customers, the bouncer was on the ball and quickly escorted him off the premises. And late at night heading back to the hotel, zig zagging our way back by the GPS, there were a few traffic light intersections that gave off the feeling, so I always made sure I had an egress path and kept watch of my surroundings. As as local I'm sure I'd learn when and where not to go.

I've lived here for about 3 years. There are seedy places in Myrtle Beach. As long as you leave the streets before 2am and only stick around areas where groups are present you'll be fine.
