My husband and I were having a conversation yesterday while we was sitting on the beach. We were watching people walk by and trying to figure out who was a localand who was a tourist. What started the conversation was that when we talk to random people on the beach that most of them when saying goodbye say to have a local good vacation. And we say the same back. Well. Obviously. We live here now and are not on vacation.so my husband and I are curious how doyou tell a local from a tourist?

Sorry about the typos I'm on my phone.

You're not from here, therefore, you're not a local.

The locals when they say " have a nice day" have that wonderful southern twang. They smile a lot and are happy with their world.
Although, many of the tourist are very friendly people too. It is the accent that kind of helps. Then again the WV people have a beautiful southern accent also. So that can also make for confusion.
You won't tell by people walking by. North, South, East and West...we look the same. LOL

Born and raised in Myrtle Beach. Imo, most people from Myrtle Beach, especially the younger generation, do not have Southern twangs/accents. I think it's because the area is so touristy, transient and the many Northern/mid-western transplants here we don't develop much if any Southern accent at all. You start to hear more Southern accents the more inland you go like Conway, Aynor, or south when you reach Pawley's Island/Litchfield.

You might be like me and think you don't....

I have to say my dentist office in Murrells are all from that area. They tell me "born and raised", and they have heavy accents.

1 - You wont find many locals strolling the beach (unless a storm is approaching and the waves are for surfing), believe it or not, most locals dont even go down to the beach, too many vacationers.

2 - tank top, tanned (and not from laying out),old pick-up usually in the FoodLion parking lot.

I went to coach yesterday up on 17. One of the SAs asked me how I was enjoying my vacation? When I told her we lived here that we wasn't vacationing, she told me it's weird because most people who live here are pale and don't have very good tans as my husband and I did. I found the comment beyond strange....who could possibly live on the beach and be pale? Unless you don't like to go outside much, or don't tan easily seems weird to live on a beach and never go.
We have been at one every day since we got here. From pawleys, to ocean isle beach I've been to them all in a week's time. However the beach was the main reason we came here, so I'll probably always go. If you don't go to the beach or even Like it...why bother moving here, since it's all about the beaches.

Seems kind of weird to let people on vacation control if you go to a beach or not......odd. why live at the beach if you don't go?
