Perth Amboy? I'm from South River.

With the right attitude, it's a non issue.

Awesome. My wife has lived there all her life, than got married to me and now lives in Birmingham, AL. Talk about a culture shock. She is getting used to it though, and looks forward to the day that we can move to SC so we can be close to the water.

I have heard many kind things from people about moving, and some encouraging words. Thanks. It eases the mind a bit about moving. I spent a few years living in a small town in Vermont (from having lived in AL all my life). I suppose if I can handle local hostility towards outsiders there, I can handle a few bad apples in SC. Thanks.

Well, it really depends where you move to. In the suburban areas near the larger cities, (Greenville, Columbia, Charleston, etc..) everyone is from the North anyway, so you should have no problems fitting in. The beach areas are the same way, as are most of the medium size towns. However if you plan on living in the boondocks you can expect to run in to a few people who will dislike you for encroaching on their homeland, however eventually they will accept you.

Where would you consider the boondocks? I might move to Conway, N. Myrtle, Murrell's, that sort of area.

Conway (preferred choice) and North Myrtle Beach should do just fine. Most of the coastal areas are really not much trouble at all. Usually if you stick within 20 miles of the ocean, or about 15-20 miles around the bigger cities you should not have any problems.

You said Conway is a "preferred choice". Can you elaborate on that? I have been tossing around Conway, N. Myrtle, or Socastee as possibilities, and have heard mixed reviews. I have heard people suggest Garden City, Surfside, etc., but I am afraid that might be a bit out of my league pricewise. Also, what are your thoughts on Little River, Murrell's Inlet and Longs?

Conway is a better choice (IMO) because it's more inland but not too far. It's in the middle of where it's starts to get very rural and still close to where everything is. It's probably the least expensive and the lowest taxes. Longs would be similiar but there's less happening over there. Socastee might be another town to consider.
