Good point. The Tribune reported that the Black Caucus is supporting him...

Ok, can somebody, anybody, please explain to me what this schlep has ever done for the black community other than help some corrupt politicians hold on to power. As the saying goes, you get the government you deserve.

Mike Madigan, more than any other elected official in Illinois, has been responsible for Illinois' fiscal distress.

He has had a major part in passing unbalanced budgets for decades. Also, he has enabled the taking of 'holidays' on pension payments and for underfunding pensions in other ways.

Thought I'd update the thread with the news that Madigan has suspended his run for IL Democratic Speaker, there are 19 hard "no's" against him, and I believe, one "present" in the last vote. The two or three who are running against him only have a few votes, they are way behind. I'm not sure what the rules are, what happens if no one gets the minimum number of required votes? Does the party simply not have a "Speaker" position? No analogies to the Klan having the "Grand Wizard" position vacant...

I wouldn't get too excited. This is a shrewd calculated move on his part. 60 votes are needed to elect a Speaker. The next closest right now is Rep. Ann Williams with 18 votes. Madigan got 51. As the Tribune pointed out, he's basically daring 60 representatives to cross the line and back another candidate. I predict that will not happen.

The Governor, who never missed an opportunity to righteously criticize Trump, has been dead silent on this. What a fat hypocrite, IMO. My prediction is that there will be no consensus on a replacement and we'll get 60 representatives voting for Madigan in a week or two, with 9 saying they lament their choice but that they're doing it in the interest of moving Illinois government forward without the gridlock which characterized the Rauner Administration.

There are 118 members of the IL General Assembly. 73 are Democrats. I predict he will get his 60. He has 51 now. They'll posture for a week or two and then he'll get it in the interest of moving us forward.

73 democrats. 19 committed to not vote for Madigan leading up to today. That means he should have 54 votes....instead he only has 51 so the number spurning Madigan has GROWN to 22!!! Love it! Keep the faith!!! If they continue to grow that number then other dems will see the tide turning...

Believe me, this is one where I desperately hope I'm wrong. I would love to be wrong. I will smile if I'm wrong. Your numbers are correct and there is some hope in them but remember, deals can be made, and nobody's better at making them than Madigan.

I don't know how the next two years are going to shake out. But hopefully the voters wake up and start making bad politicians pay with their jobs.
