Nadanique, the areas mentioned in that U of MN paper do not meet your criteria of looking south of Orlando. Climate-wise, that’s about the coldest part of the state during the late fall and winter.

However, if you’re willing to compromise on location, those areas are very nice, up and coming, and the public schools have a good reputation.

I'm reaching out here because during prior relocations when reaching out to real estate agents asking for good neighborhoods, apparently that translated to only white neighborhoods, because those were the only places she would take me. In all honesty, I'd rather a neighborhood be based on class with great diversity to INCLUDE more than one or two black families.

Almost forgot to mention we are looking for coastal cities on both the East Coast and the gulf. If not coastal, at least a 30-45 minute drive to the beach.

One more thing, we only have ONE child left at home . He is an elite basketball player entering high school in the Fall so hopefully a city/neighborhood where the schools have a decent athletic program.

Thank you all in advance!!!!!

As someone who has lived in the DMV and has many black friends still living there, there is absolutely no comparison between the DMV and Florida. I know exactly what you are looking for and that does not exist in Florida as several other posters have said.

Florida is like going WAY BACK in time when it comes to segregation and diversity (compared to DMV) and you will be very very hard-pressed to find a concentration of upper-class highly educated black families here; they will be scattered and not concentrated in neighborhoods like in DMV. That's b/c the majority of upper class blacks do not come here (except for vacay; they do love the beach in Jan!). They move to places like ATL, NYC, NC Triangle, Dallas, West Coast, etc. Here in Floriduh your child will continue to be the only black kid in the class/group/cohort etc.

I live in one of the most expensive parts of Tampa and there are exactly ZERO black Americans living in this area.

Make several visits before committing to a Florida relocation. You will be moving to a state where seeing BLUE LIVES MATTER and BLACK RIFLES MATTER bumper stickers abound.

As a native Floridian myself, this is pretty accurate. The areas of Orlando and Tampa/St. Pete that I mentioned in an earlier post are probably the closest thing you'll find to what you're looking for in Florida (I'm not familiar with South Florida), but it's nothing like what you're used to in the DC metro or places like Atlanta or Birmingham that have well-established affluent black communities.

I also agree. There won’t be a “concentration” of what you’re looking for. However, in some of the areas mentioned in this thread, you won’t be the only one — far from it — and so you won’t feel out of place either.

DMV has always been Department of Motor Vehicles to me. When people are too lazy to spell out words I just ignore their posts plus no one I would want in my neighborhood is concerned about money or race.
