I've lived here since 2004. Imagine how cheap things were back then..

Heh, bought my first house here in the 99....$99k for a 1550 sq ft house off Duval and Mopac area. Sold in in 2006 for right around double that (although sunk a decent bit into it). The person I sold it to still owns it and it has just about doubled again (appraised value, anyway).

I moved here in 97. I lived with a grad student in the st johns area that owned his own home. Back then grad students in science made about 12-15K and the homes in the st johns area were 70k. Us two renters probably paid for his mortgage. It is weird to me that 2011 is considered to be a long time ago. It seems like yesterday. 1997 doesnt even seem like that long ago.

I came to Austin in 1996. Bought 6 acres outside of Pflugerville for $29K and built a house.
Sold in 2010 and made quite the profit.

Are we just trying to drive millennials nuts now? Ok, here's mine: Moved here in 1989. After the dorms, our first west campus 2 bedroom apartment was $600/mo, during the summer rent dropped to $375. Bought my first house in NW Hills in 1996 close to Mesa Dr for $180K. Max I've ever paid for a home is my current house in Lost Creek, which cost $360K in 2006.

Yeah, but on the flip-side, i was making about 15-18k per year in 1991, splitting a $600/mo. 3bdrm apartment of Lamar/183 with two roommates. Very high crime, police were 'regulars' there. As recent as 1988, I was paying $375/mo for a 2/2 of Far West, but it jumped to $500 and I had to bail on it :P.

How is the Lamar / 183 area today? It looks mildly sketchy, not terrible but it does look like it could use a face lift.

I have not been up there in forever, but bet it still isn't great. The apartments were 'Research Pointe' and it looks like they are still there. Looks like maybe 'The Parc at Crestview', though? I can find listings under both names. The 3/2 floor plan looks to be $1550 now. Quick glance at reviews and it appears that the units are showing their age .

I moved to Austin in â€86 - working for Texas Instruments at the time. I rented an apartment on Anderson Mill for $249 a month. Apartment locator person was surprised that I would live so far out. The 1 BR 1 BA floor plan I had is now called a luxury Plan and goes for up to $1300 a month. There wasn’t a lot out this way back then, just the old K-Mart at 620/183. It cracks me up when I see the signs for the David Weekly Springwoods community sandwiched in between the fire station and the Cube storage on A.M. advertised as “Central Living”. It still feels like far NW Austin to me.

You are right about the crime. I remember how bad it was in the late 80s/early 90s. Even in NW Hills and nearby, you had the NW Hills rapist, the kidnapping and murder of Madeleine Murray O'Hair, yogurt shop murders, tons of property crime (my car stereo was stolen multiple times)... so I guess we got what we paid for back then. Who would have known how much things would change?
