A rifle in the 22-250 Remington caliber oughta do the job

I have a Mauser in that caliber, with a stainless steel barrel. With the loads that I use, which consist of Hornady 60-grain VMax, and about 35 grains of H-380 powder and Winchester LR primers, I get 1/2" groups at 200 yards, and that's on a bad day..

I stated that my hubby uses a .223. After seeing the post above I realized my mistake, it's a 22-250 and he loves that gun. So do I but I just like shootin' beer cans and such.

The .223 Rem is a fine caliber for shorter ranges, but for those 300-400 yard shots, you can't beat the 22-250 Rem. Other calibers that are good for varmints and larger game at short to medium ranges are the .243 Winchester and the 6mm Rem. I do have a Remington 700 in the 6mm caliber. I also got my first whitetail with a 6mm Rem at 400 yards.

I can't get out to the long ranges you guys do with that hi-power stuff ... and I don't want to carry over to the neighbor's fields (just in case they're out there) ....

But my 1900's vintage .25 caliber Stevens Single Shot sure does nice up to 100 yards ... which is the longest shot I'll take on a prairie rat with the iron sights on it. Don't want to spoil it with glass sights which weren't original era to it.

Sweet vintage shooter, it is.

I use a lever action Marlin .22 with peep sights. It is the first gun I ever shot--my grandfather having taught me at about 6 years old. I have never adjusted the sights on it in well over 30+ years, and it is as accurate now as it was then. Best ever shot for me with it was the end of a can at about 150 yards--all I could see was the glint of the sun. Thousands and thousands of rounds I've put through it....

Default Gun shop

I went to the local gun shop last year and wanted a 25-06. They didn't have one so I settled and got a 22-250. Didn't like it. Oh it shot fine but I couldn't use it on game because of the smaller cal. But boy would it drive tacks.
