salt was collected on the Idaho side of the line(Stump creek, and Tygee valley) , in the late 1800s then hauled to the gold camps in western Montana , used to extract the gold from the ore.

It was originally going to be named "Tall Tale" by one of the town's early settlers in honor of a fisherman friend of his who also lived in the town, and claimed to have, on three separate occasions, caught and released the world record rock bass at nearby Lake DeSmet.

LOL!! that was funny. Sorry tho that is not the answer I was looking for, even though it does sound better than the story behind Story that I found.
