The state’s first school was established at Fort Laramie (pop. 243) in 1852 by post chaplain William Vaux, who was assisted by his daughter, Victoria.

Before I tell the story of this portion of the Oregon Trail, I have to correct an inadvertent misstatement I made earlier, and thank you to Althea-1, who discretely PM'd me.

Bo was NOT George Bush's dog. He is a Portuguese Water dog who is technically owned by Barack Obama's kids. President Bush's dog was, of course, Barney, a Scottish Terrier.

Barney was famously known for greeting official visitors to the White House and was always a gentleman about it. There were very few Oval Office meetings from which Barney was officially barred. Tragically, he passed away of natural causes earlier this year at the family home in Dallas.

My apologies; I blame it on decaf. (And my poor memory.)

But Jasper is still believed to be Dana Perino's second best friend in the whole world - right after her husband.

Okay. Second school in Wyoming. The town of Fort Bridger (pop 345) marks the spot where Fort Bridger was established in 1843 along the Oregon Trail. It is about as far southwest in Wyoming as you can go without falling into someplace called "Utah."

It was there in 1860 where Magistrate Judge (and general store owner) William Alexander Carter opened a private school, which was the second school to be opened in Wyoming. The Territory of Wyoming, with it's attendant first public school in Cheyenne, would not be declared until 1868.

(Ironically, after his death in 1881, Judge Carter's papers wound up in a repository in... someplace called the "University of Utah.")

Thanks for the correction on "Bo".

Great job, you got it. My source was a little different, but it was close enough. The state’s second school was opened at Fort Bridger (pop. 400) in 1860 by Judge William Carter, with Miss Fannie Foot as the teacher.

You are up!

Thank you, sir.

Kenny Rodgers made a movie in or about the mid-1980s (hint).

One of the scenes in that movie was filmed in one of Wyoming's most famous saloons.

Which saloon was it?

I'll take a guess. The movie was Wild Horses made in 1985. It was shot near Sheridan and the saloons name was The Mint Bar.

Here's a hint: it was before the 1950's
