Now, we have cars that are apparently expressing defiance!
Well, sure. If it was on a (self-?) expressway, then that makes a lot of sense. If you don't want your car popping off @ you like that, make sure it has a good muffler. (Or you could give it a shot of local - that'll shut it up too. Or make it yield, or drive it through a hospital or school or church zone - they hate that. Then maybe it'll give you the silent treatment ...)

No, that explanation would be...too logical.
As we see so often nowadays, this is a case of somebody using an expression without having any concept of its actual meaning, and the probable cause is...a lack of reading...
