When you read these words, does it imply to you that there WAS an accident? When I read, "nearly avoided an accident," I take it to mean that we tried to avoid an accident and failed. I'm wondering how others read it. I assume that the writer probably meant that they had a near collision.

Thank you! A news station is reporting about a road rage incident and they keep writing, "nearly avoided an accident." It left me wondering if the two vehicles actually made contact or not.
The following was directed at me on another sub-forum here on City-Data. It was easy for me to recognize it as an insult, but I'll be darned if I could make heads or tails of what the poster actually meant:
