When I was about 11 years old, our local newspaper ran a group photo of some girls who belonged to a community theater company in our town, and the caption above the photo was...Young Thespians.

I was shocked that the newspaper had "outed" these girls, even though the term "outing" (in regard to revealing somebody's sexual preference) was not yet a part of the language.

Yes, I was a slightly stupid kid, and did not yet understand the difference in meaning between "thespian" and "lesbian". Luckily, I did learn a few things as I grew older--unlike the person who originally posted that gem.

The "thesbian" howler can be found in the discussion section of IMBd site for "I'll Be Seeing You", a 1944-45 movie starring Ginger Rogers and Shirley Temple (and several other stars, obviously).

The movie is a wartime homefront drama about personal secrets which impede a whirlwind romance. Shirley plays the young teenaged cousin of Ginger, and was sixteen when the movie was filmed. Some think her performance was over the top, while others found it charming and considered her big scene near the end quite moving.

The IMBd discussions are rich grounds for unintentional howlers, btw.

In a discussion about parental involvement with children's school assignments:

"She made hers out of paper machete"

Wow, don't mess with that mom!

"I would think twice about playing chicken with a Semi because cars always loose."

Yeah, playing games with a semi can make your car pretty loose!

No, but the original comment I quoted appears to have been seriously intended. You can judge for yourself in the discussion board for "I'll Be Seeing You", on the ISBd site.
