It was an early prediction that has come back to haunt me. There was 217 hours up until the 26th, about 6 hours on Saturday then 2 days of total grey (the spanner in the works)but without rain. Today is totally clear, so fingers crossed. 240 hours is still on the cards.

The last 2 months have been very nice for sunshine.

What's the MTD now? It looks as if the NZ record for the period 1930 onwards was 233.7 hrs at Nelson in 1932. (Next best are 229 at New Plymouth in 2005 and 226 at Blenheim in 1972). There is an older record of about 235 hrs at Nelson in 1923, not sure if it has been scrutinised.

Nelson had 238 hours ending Tuesday evening, and sunshine all day today. I could see what looked like low heavy fog (not here though) in Nelson until about 10.00 am, so another 8-10 hours on that total. Looks like we've got a new August record.

Blenheim had 226 hours ending Tuesday evening. Too bad Motueka no longer has a recorder.

Nelson has had 1608 hours too date. Do you how many hours Whakatane is claiming to date?

It looks as if Blenheim could also topple the old record then. NIWA's stats for July are not yet included in their monthly summary table - must give them a shakeup. The July YTD for Whakatane appears to be about 1322, so despite the dodginess of their setup they are clearly running well behind Nelson this year. It was absurd that a place that topped the table only twice in the period 1957-2002 could suddenly become the sunniest locality in the country (2010 and 2008/9 if their data had all been accepted).

How do you calculate Nelson's MTD sunshine from the evening paper's tables? They only gave annual YTDs last time I looked - do you note down the YTD from the previous month?

The annoying part about the Whakatane business, is that it has already become cemented as fact in the minds of some people. I've already been called a sore loser for attempting to provide some context to their claim.

The Nelson Evening Mail has recently added daily totals for each month, for Nelson and Blenheim, very handy.

I don't think the Whakatane situation will change in the near future. Nobody will fund work to clean up the messy sunshine recording situation. There are a number of other sites that are clearly giving readings that are too high, but being less sunny than the top few they don't attract any attention.

Ever so happy for a number of reasons:

1. Twelfth consecutive month of below-average to average sunshine with this month’s (August) total being the lowest in 4 years

2. A heavy downpour last night boosted the monthly rain total, at Rose Bay, to within 10mm of the average and also, based on preliminary monthly data, the highest August total in 3 years

3. Lack of “horrid” icy, dry and sunny westerly winds

The records so far stored at NIWA's Cliflo give the following to Saturday 27th: Blenheim 210.0, Appleby 215.3, Takaka 203.7, Nelson 226.5. It may be a week before all the August numbers are in (still considered provisional for a little while after that).

PS: To reach about 80% of the recordable for the month Nelson would need about 243-245 hours. So, brilliant though the month has been in these places, it doesn't quite match July 1952 when Blenheim had about 84.5% and Nelson 82.8%.

Happy that it FINALLY cooled down up here in Denver. ( of course I was enjoying the outdoors, so I should have put this up on Saturday.)
