For liking cooler summers? I do talk to people around NYC, and by and large I don't get that impression.

I understand, but the expectations are also different. We average around 45 days of 30C+ temps and 23 days of 32C+ temps.

2009 was considered one of the coolest summers in recent memory here. Average high temps were 77.4F/25.2C in June, 78.8F/26.0C in July and 79.4F/26.3C. We only had 20 days of 30C/86F+ temps and 7 days of 32C/90F temps. The news outlets called it "The Year without a summer"

2014 was also a cool summer and by the looks of it, this summer might be similar

2009 had a very warm summer here and the all-time high of 103F in was recorded in July.
