We hit like -19° C here in March 2015. March can still have ridiculous cold blasts. Welcome to "spring" in the Northeast

somewhat different conditions on the summit of Mt. Washington than I was there a week ago:

Dangerously cold conditions will arrive behind the front Saturday morning accompanied by an uptick in winds for the daytime hours Saturday. As the bitterly cold Arctic high builds in Saturday, the summits will clear yet again, but high winds blowing over freshly fallen snow will likely restrict visibilities for much of the day. In addition, the combination of temperatures well below zero, and winds ramping back up to the triple digits will create life threatening wind chills as low as the 80s below zero, particularly Saturday morning. Individuals planning to be above treeline, especially Saturday morning, should be well educated on the first signs of hypothermia, and expect to succumb to frostbite in a matter of minutes unless adequately covered at all times. While Saturday appears to be the coldest day of the next several, a Wind Chill Warning will stay in effect through at least the first half of Sunday.

sounds like it would be hard to take photos

That's why I use Wunderground, they get their data straight for NWS I believe. I do remember you guys getting a couple of big snows in early February.

It just seems considering your averages, early March is still well within winter. Temperatures goes up quite fast though.
back now, skimming some previous Marches on NOWData. Early March is still winter, but the forecast high around 20°F is unusually low for early March, might be record breaking for that day*. We've gotten like -2°F in early March under a cold dry air mass, but then temperature shoots up to the upper 20s. Our forecast low is 6°F and 9°F, cold for March but not that special. Typical for in and out Arctic blasts for the wind to prevent very cold lows but create very cold daytime temperatures. We had a day just as cold in early January; would be neat to have the coldest day of winter in January

*anytime it's record breaking for one day but not at all for the whole it's just random luck from not enough years on record

132 years of snow observations in Chicago make it clear: Snow chances beyond March 4th are hardly nil

Again, not about how many times its happened. Its about getting the coldest airmass of the season in March. Get it?

But I put NWS Albany words in check by checking...

Check it out..

Albany's forecast (per NWS) and the Winter Low Max and Low Minmum

High of 24° Saturday, Low of 3° Sunday gets mighty close to the coldest of the winter season but not looking like "the coldest" per their forecast.

Here's Danbury, CT. Nope, not the coldest. They dipped to -5° in January and had a low max of 20°.

I checked Hartford and the same, not the coldest.

I haven't checked the 850mb temps yet, maybe they meant the "airmass" itself? Either way.... It's cold and I wish wasn't happening in March!

When the jet stream is south of us with one Arctic front after another, its gonna be cold. And they trended colder

Quote:
National Weather Service New York NY
407 AM EST Fri Mar 3 2017

A series of Arctic fronts move across the region, one this
evening and another Saturday.

Intensifying upper level jet will be south of the region.

Went with a colder solution of temperatures following the
NAM12/GMOS/MET guidance combination. Highs stay mostly in the
mid to upper 30s with continued cold air advection from the NW.

Main upper level jet will still be positioned south of the
region.

Snow showers likely for first hour or two this evening before
decreasing from NW to SE as shortwave pivots southeast of the
region along with the surface arctic front.

Dry and cold gusty conditions continue later tonight through
Saturday as cold air advection continues to deliver much colder
temperatures. Lows forecast tonight are in the teens to low 20s
while Saturday will have highs mainly below freezing except for
NYC which will hover near freezing. The trend is colder for
daytime highs because a secondary cold front and mid level vort
max move across the area from north to south Saturday, to
reinforce the colder air.

Very cold air remains in place Saturday night and Sunday, and leaned
toward cooler mos numbers during this time frame. Lows Saturday
night will range from near zero, to the upper teens in NYC. A gusty
NW wind will only add to the chill, with wind chill readings from
-10 to zero expected, quite cold!

On Sunday, temperatures should rebound into the 30s.

Dry weather is forecast with mainly clear skies through the latter
portion of the weekend.

FYI: I'm calling it. This will be the coldest day and coldest weekend until next winter. Enjoy it if you can. Ski resorts got the guns running.
