For some reason March 2016 is a complete blur and now I know why...it was well above average. Not like 2012, but still quite mild with an average high of 56 F/13 C and low of 32 F/0 C. Five days were above 70 F/21 C with a max of 78 F/26 C. It was much more above average than this March is below average. So we have a ways to go before truly balancing out.
Man when the weather is like it has been the past two weeks life is not normal. You can't be outside for too long cause the air hurts your face. You can't do any outdoor activities. You have to spend more money on buses and taxis, since what could have been a charming 15 block walk is now a vigorous test against the elements. You have to spend all your time coddled up indoors. I hate living like this, and I hope to escape to a climate where this sort of weather would be a once-in-a-lifetime thing, as opposed to being a damn near guarantee for the first three or four months of the year
When I was outside pushing carts last week when it was cold it didn't feel that bad. Granted I have a very good parka but my face wasn't in much pain at all. And I was outside for 3-4 hours.
Whitefield, NH reached -12F this morning . Came close to saranac lake
Whitefield yesterday had a high of 39°F, so a diurnal range of 51°F! A range of only 43°F. Frost hollow + dry cool air + clear skies + sun angle of the equinox = big diurnal range. A similar setup in September would result in a... freeze and pleasant afternoon temperatures.

Big changes coming this week as a trough moves in from the Pacific. Today will be our last 90°F+ for a while. Thursday is only looking at a high of 70°F/21.1°C (norm 80°F/26.7°C), then warming up to near avg for the weekend
FYI......... Sun doesn't do squat. It's the temps that really get things going.
I know you got into a debate about this but I believe the sun does make a difference. Obviously temperature is most important but sun also plays a part.
I notice that even if it is below freezing, sometimes even in the mid-20's (° F) if there is a strong late morning to early afternoon sun, there will be some melting.
This is because, even though the ambient air temperature may be below freezing, the surface (road, sidewalk, car, roof, etc.) is warmer because of the sun.
