One thing I can guarantee... whenever you are near the Vortex, its downright frigid. Extreme in the Lower 48 case.

And that thing doesn't move around like a surface storm does either.
How bad would it be?? Would it be all time record lows broken as in single digits all the way down to North Florida and gulf coast kind of cold that hasn't been seen since 1985 or just like 2014 and 2015.

I hope we (the eastern USA) have a very cold winter, and Narsarsuaq has a very mild winter. It's odd - when the eastern USA has a cold winter, Narsarsuaq is usually (but not always) mild. (e.g. 1976-1977, early 1985, 2009-2010). When the eastern USA has a mild winter, Narsarsuaq may be cold or mild depending on the year. I think it has something to do with the jet stream.

So the correlation is really only cold eastern USA = (usually) mild Narsarsuaq.

On February 9, 2010, Narsarsuaq had a high of 55 F / 13 C and low of 51 F / 11 C! Normal is 26 F / -3 C high and 13 F / -11 C low for February 9 in Narsarsuaq. This winter, I hope they have an above freezing mean and a maximum of 59 F / 15 C or more, and I hope they hit 80 F / 27 C next summer with 60s F (15-21 C) for highs most days. While these figures are well above average for Narsarsuaq, they do happen. (except their record high is 76 F / 24 C)

The 64,000 dollar question is will it snap in two?
Might well be. One over Quebec and another over Siberia.

One just never knows in the eastern US. Any single winter can have that kind of cold. Such is life in the most volatile winter climate on the planet.

That vortex has been sitting there getting colder and colder, and when it lets loose watch out. My understanding is that in Jan of 1985 it was sitting right over Montreal.
