I think they are weeping willows that have been pollarded.

Most of the other trees are either ash, olive willow, oak, cherry, hornbeam or lombardy poplar.

I am surprised that a rural place like that has a 3 lane motorway, here you need a city population for that. Like 2 million.

Are you kidding? We have 4-lane highways cutting through our mountains all over the place. Traveling through West Virginia is fun at 70 mph, twisting and turning through all those mountains for hours on end.

Not here. It needs to have a large population for a road like that.
