I can see why Southern Italy got snow. Check out how far the 850mb freezing line dug south in Europe.
Core of cold over North America about to unleash and spit out lobes of Polar air. -25C now southern Hudson Bay
Lol @ England being in an island of mildness. Naples was 43/38°F today. So cold enough to snow if higher up was cold enough (which it was) but not enough for much to stick:
Looks like it was cold enough for snow for NYC and Long Island. But they got freezing rain and sleet, so somewhere further down must have been warmer. Or it was at a different time than your map.

Haha poor England.
Yeah this was 7pmEST map, they were getting ice this morning and the frz line was just north of NYC while their surface was in the 20s. Plus distance on map a bit decieving. Cold air trying to push south all day but stuck around nyc
What's interesting is that Italy coast was getting sea effect snows but for us the 850 temps need to be much colder to get ocean effect snows. Looks like it was just -5-0C there. Is the sea there much colder?
Then again the snows were yesterday. Never mind. I should check yesterday's map. Too lazy.
Feared it would be icy on the roads this evening for my ride home. The parking lot was icy in spots and my car was covered in a sheet of ice. But the ride was fine.

In southern Italy yesterday's 850 hpa temperatures were between -5°C and -8°C, easing away in the afternoon; in Campania up to -10°C. It was a rapid but strong cold wave which hit central and southern Italy, while northern regions were under the Azores dome.
Here precipitations are heavy due to the presence of mountain ranges (orographic lift); also contrasts are generated by the relatively warm seas, producing thunderstorms and showers. So probably it's easier to get sleet or snow without extreme temperatures.
I can't remember the last time it was this warm during winter. 9.3C/49F in neighbouring Kaarina.
9C is the average high on 15 April.
