Hmm. I meant (absolute) departures, perhaps I was unclear. Still, that should limit it to winter, as winter is usually more variable. Maybe this Arctic shot is somewhat more intense up here than on teh Conneticut coast? It looks like it from your map.
I guess -2C qualifies as well below average for them. Paris (Orly) according to ECMWF 10 day doesn't go below -2C, and every single day has a high of about 3-5C. Talk about wimpy cold. As I said, at the end of the month we will probably be 20F below average.

Would have to look at details . last year northern CT had 6 days with a max temp departures more than -10 (Jan21-28) This year only 4 the whole month.
Arctic air not as cold this yr, suspected with no deep snowpacks around or early Lake ice. Things might change though.
Here's every 7 days last January. (I know it blends the warm/cold days) 8-12 below normal last week of Jan 2014. Looks about the same as this past week, but again, its blending some warm days we had. Like 1/27/14 was 7 above normal.

Well most of western Europe has an oceanic climate. They almost always have wimpy extremes.... How cold (or hot for that matter) do you expect them to get? No matter what, their cold and heat episodes are moderated by the Atlantic Ocean.

Just played the latest Euro loop myself for Europe. The most the 850s and surface go is 5-10 below normal. Don't know if its just this particular year or period but yeah, nothing impressive about that compared to what we get.

Can it be? Is winter finally showing up? (Cold AND snow?).
This month should of happened in December IMO, feel like instead of snow in February we would of gotten it this month. We'll see. Maybe a 2nd half winter?NAO going negative soon?

THIS WILL BE THE START OF A PARADE OF CLIPPER SYSTEMS THAT SHOULD LEAD TO PROGRESSIVELY COLDER WX BEYOND THE FCST PERIOD
Below average every day apart from the last day, which is average. That 3c day will feel very cold! We had a 3.2c high on 4th January, the last time before that was 26th March 2013.
That's not looking cold enough! We need highs around 0c and lows of at least -2c!

Well, as I did last year I will again this year: I am praying every night to the weather gods that you have the coldest summer on record(cloudy too). This is payment for your constant hoping for extreme cold. Well, I want you to have extreme cold this summer. Here is hoping for the coldest summer in Chicago history.
Only 5 months away.
