Not only a snow record yesterday but Oklahoma City has 6" of snow for the season.

That's more than Boston & Chicago with 2.9".

Pittsburgh 3.3".
Hartford with 5.8".
Bridgeport 0.9"
Providence 2.5"
NYC 1.2"
Philly 0.1"
Columbus Ohio 4.1"
Milwaukee 5.1"

Yup, not a pattern that favors sustained arctic air. This is why I canceled this winter from being a very cold one (Top 10) many weeks ago. Pattern not favoring it.

GFS6z data for Danbury,CT which you can use as a general idea for the Northeast.
  • Typical up, down, up.
  • We have been warm, we will get Chilly/Cold 4 days coming, not extreme though.
  • Then Precip moves in & temps move up.
  • The Harsh Arctic air keeps pushing back. Notice now its January 7th.
This basically says single digits and teens for Jan 7-11. Lakes would finally start to freeze over in CT.

Eventually I'm sure we'll get an arctic wave to happen but harder to believe since it keeps getting pushed back!

Either way, Monday to Friday this week looks chilly finally!

Thought I check the 850mb temps around the globethis morning to see if there's been any progress of the Arctic air moving south.

The -10C line has a certain shape to it, can't quite make it out.

Nice to see southern Canada & Europe with cold temps now. Although not extreme for Southern Canada. Air Mass of -10 to -20C not impressive but it's a start?

Need more of those whites (-20+C) to show up more in Canada & border, for U.S to get cold and the -20C line to push much south more.

But overall not bad at all actually. Instead of spokes coming off, it looks like the airmass has enough umph to push south with coverage.

Atlanta, Georgia: 56 F/13 C

Not sure why it's chillier in Jackson, Mississippi: 47 F/8 C
It's 49F (9C) where I'm at - a cold front came thru last night. It should stay in the 40's all day with a cold rain.

Another Spring day here. Sun isn't out so feels more like fall than Spring today.

5 days in a row hitting 50F

Completely ignoring the Euro showing snowstorm next weekend cause I don't believe that crap,

Lets take a look at the latest GFS

Here is Friday 7pm time frame. High Pressure in Northeast, nice seasonable chilly day. Crucial Rain/Snow line south of the area, north of Philly at this time..

Notice a storm in the south ready to move up... but where????

Towards the death lakes it goes... Boom.,.,., Rain and warm up again here and in the East next weekend. What a lovely pattern for winter.

The forecast was spot on. Low 80s widespread across southern Georgia. Savannah is currently 79 F and Charleston, SC up to 75 F. The cloudcover/showers kept the heat south of Atlanta. Only 60 F there.

Only 60 in New Orleans too. But the east coast is basking.

Not completely disagreeing with the GFS here, but 500mb temps upstream (486) beforehand are quite cold and the arctic air will be closeby, unlike some of the other scenarios so far. The one item that is moderating these airmasses from reaching their true intensity is the lack of snowcover over the US.

Nah, I think this winter is gonna be sucky with too many mild spells and not enough snow. The cold isn't coming like I thought it would.
