Another 4-5 inches is falling throughout the day. This winter is no joke...

It’s now the third-snowiest winter in Chicago weather records
Posted on Mar 12 2014 - 7:11 am by pdaileywgntv
Chicago’s official weather observing site reported a storm total of 3.6 inches snowfall. This makes the 2013-14 season total 79.1 inches – the third snowiest in weather records dating back to the 1884-85 season. Midway picked up 6.0 inches storm total, making their seasonal total 85.2 inches – their second-snowiest.

Snowfall records:

Official Chicago site ( Currently O’Hare Airport)

1- 89.7 inches 1978-79

2- 82.3 inches 1977-78

3- 79.1 inches 2013-14

4- 77.0 inches 1969-70

Midway

1- 89.7 inches 1978-79

2- 85.2 inches 2013-14

3- 82.3 inches 1977-78

4- 77.0 inches 1969-70

The Midway site was the “official” site from 1942 to 1979.

The winter snowfall totals here are still not that high, a bit above average but still far from record breaking. Average would be 1+14+38+44+31cm from October to February. So far we're at 0+3+47+54+44 =148cm compared to a 128cm average. March and April are supposed to be 27+7cm.

It's the persistency of snow cover that's really unusual. Despite the 10C weather yesterday, we still kept at least 1/2 foot of snowpack, and now we're supposed to get 4 inches on top of that, followed by mostly cold weather for the next couple weeks. So it looks like the snow cover will have lasted from early december into at least late march.

The nice breeze is transforming into strong gusts of wind. But at least it's still warm.

Just rain here so far but the NWS has this to say about temps:

FRONTAL PASSAGE WILL BRING A VERY RAPID DROP IN TEMPERATURES...FALLING 8 TO 10 DEGREES PER HOUR FOR THE FIRST FEW HOURS AFTER FRONTAL PASSAGE.

Wind chill expected to have things feeling like zero or less overnight.

Low Level Jet coming through and storm spinning counterclockwise making nice energy for those on SouthEast side of it. Last burst of warmth pushing north because of it.

Washington Dulles gusted to 48mph and others are reporting increasing gusts.
