I think the pressure was high. I wonder if it was the same pattern as described in Britain (windless days can bring cloud and fog in winter).

The coldest temperatures on earth for several days straight, yes including Antarctica, were not recorded in Siberia, but in Kaltag, and several other villages in the western Interior of Alaska:

Kaltag -52 °F
Tanana
-51 °F
Galena
-50 °F
McGrath
-47 °F
Selawik

there is a warming trend coming next week

New York City went from 13 degrees/-2 below zero wind chill to 62 degrees in just 3 days.

I just went outside with a t shirt 30 minutes ago and it felt comfortable. After 10 minutes, the wind picked up with 20mph-25mph gusts and it felt colder but it still felt great.

If someone went outside with a t shirt in New York City 3 days ago, they could have died from hyperthermia/frostbite, and maybe even with a sweater/no coat.

Washington DC went up to 68 degrees today and was around 17 degrees 3 days before.

Some parts of New Jersey 20 to 40 miles West and Southwest of New York City reached 66 degrees for today. Those areas of New Jersey probably was at 5 degrees with -5 windchill just 3 days ago.

Wow, that is really weird. I think the Northeast has stolen the Midwest's Continental climate.

On this day in 2007 the all-time record high for January (71 F) was recorded. Such a weird day.

Today was a cooler, but still unusually balmy day. Reached a high of 59 F.

Edit: Forgot to mention that this is also the anniversary of the Blizzard of 96. According to NOWdata on NOAA, my town received 16 in, but the drifts were much higher. We were trapped in the house for several days.

Pattern is shifting, but the jury is out if the colder air will have any staying power in the East.

Today has the weather I hate the most, cold, drizzling thickly, and very gloomy. It is pointless, and stupid. Booo.

Looks like there may be a heavy rain event later this week. Snow possible as well, though I'm not expecting a snowstorm by any means. Forecast for next Saturday calls for a high of only 28 F. Of course this will all probably change as the week progresses. In any case, hopefully the pattern will start to shift more favorably to cold and snow. Not getting my hopes up though.
