I've hardly seen any sunshine here, that coupled with wind it hasn't felt mild at all really. Our local weather showing -4C temperatures by the weekend and freezing fog so I don't think any record will be broken this month.

...A WINTRY MIX OF PRECIPITATION IS EXPECTED TONIGHT INTO EARLY
THURSDAY MORNING...

.A WARM FRONT APPROACHING THE REGION WILL PRODUCE A PERIOD OF
WINTRY PRECIPITATION...STARTING THIS EVENING AND CONTINUING INTO
THE EARLY MORNING HOURS OF THURSDAY.

THE PRECIPITATION IS EXPECTED TO START IN THE FORM OF SNOW AND
SLEET THIS EVENING. AS TEMPERATURES ALOFT RISE...THE SNOW AND
SLEET WILL CHANGE TO FREEZING RAIN FOR A TIME...BEFORE FINALLY
CHANGING TO PLAIN RAIN LATE TONIGHT AND THURSDAY MORNING.

SNOWFALL AMOUNTS WILL AVERAGE AROUND AN INCH. AS THE PRECIPITATION
CHANGES TO FREEZING RAIN...EXPECT AS MUCH AS ONE-TENTH OF AN INCH
OF ICE. NORMALLY COLDER LOCATIONS MAY SEE TEMPERATURES STRUGGLE TO
RISE ABOVE THE FREEZING MARK UNTIL LATE TONIGHT.

I'll believe it when I see it. I wouldn't be surprised if this is a bust.

However, if it does snow/ice, hopefully the roads will be driveable since I'll be working until around midnight.
Snowstorm seems to be a dud. Looks like it's going to be almost rain. In some ways I'm glad that I don't have to deal with snow and ice, but it'd be nice to see some snow. Got a bit sick of it from the last few years.

Since leaving Long Island, I think this is longest winter stretch I've seen with no snow or ice whatsoever. I do see chunks of ice on the side of the road from the cold nights, and a garbage can that was full of water at one time was all ice (at least last week). So far this January we've had 8/11 days break 40°F.

Last time we had snow on the ground was the beginning of November.

We've got yet another month on our hands which is running at above-record temperatures after 10 days or so... sunshine is also over 50% above average! I don't think we'll be able to keep up these sorts of crazy anomalies for the whole month but with this sort of weather, coming after such a mild autumn and December whatever happens I can have NO complaints about this winter other than the complete absence of lying snow - apart from the lack of daylight it's felt more like late-March than any January I've ever experienced. If I get time I'll have to check the record for fewest frosts in a winter - with three so far 2011/12 looks like a strong contender.
So you've gotten unusually warm weather, too? How many frosts so far?

Yes, what a bummer. I'm not surprised though. It's sad that we can't even get a slushy coating of snow.

Starting Saturday, it looks like it'll be closer to average, perhaps slightly below for a couple days.

Hopefully the end of January won't be warm, but so far this month looks somewhat similar to January 1950. http://www.wunderground.com/history/....html#calendar

Was wrong, kinda. There's snow outside my window right now, though it looks like it's at most an inch.

You know well I'm that I'd be very happy if we don't get cold at all this winter. But at this point, it's been snowless for so long, I think that if you do get some cold, we might as well get snow out of it to make it worthwhile.

We are going to get our first air frost of 2012 soon.

Yes, that is right, this winter so far has been so pants that I'm excited over the prospect of our first air frost of 2012 - after December only had around 4.

The warmest January on record was 1916 with a CET of 7.5C. 1796 and 1921 are joint 2nd with a CET or 7.3C.

Some mild January's at Heathrow:

1983: 10.0C/4.3C
1990: 10.2C/4.4C
1993: 10.3C/3.5C

2008: 10.4C/4.7C

The 2 week forecast has mostly below average conditions so it won't end up particularly mild:
