First snowstorm of the season, excluding the October one. Looks like 2-4 inches, maybe a bit more. Not much, but still should pretty. Probably will melt by midweek with a return to somewhat above freezing weather.

Incredibly windy today, top wind gust of 88mph / 141km/hr. Feels like an ice pick rammed into my ear holes with this freezing wind chill.

^^ Sounds like a different country to down here. Currently 11.1C and sunny with 10-15mph breeze, top gust today a mere 28mph. I'm impatiently awaiting the first 7.30am and 5pm daylight of the year, but we've not had much if any winter to speak of.

First "major" snowfall of the winter season. I'm guessing there's about 4 or 5 inches on the ground. Looks beautiful outside.

I was at work until 3:30 this morning and the roads were completely covered. Glad I was able to make it up my hill!

Appears as though the AO is forecasted to tank over the next two weeks along with a decrease in the NAO below baseline. The PNA is also forecasted to pop into positive territory. It appears to me as though a trough in the eastern US is very likely for the early to middle part of February. The GFS has been hinting at this pattern shift for awhile now. If it plays out correctly, Febraury will be colder than January in many places.

Well, model watching right now is pretty crazy, will it, wont it? Who knows! Cold seems to be pushed back again and again.. even if the cold arrives it'll probably be dry, calm and sunny so no snow... this winter is likely to be the first winter in over a decade where I haven't observed any snowfall accumulation at all whatsoever. A sad state of affairs, not even the winter of 88/89 can beat this..

I'm tempted to think that seeming as I haven't seen any proper accumulating snow yet then I'm not going to (btw, when did you last go the whole winter with no lying snow? I can't remember one up there, but I'm too young for 88/9 and some of the early 90s winters) but here in 2005 we got to February 21st with no lying snow and then had a record 16 consecutive days of snowfall, ditto the only lying snow I remember for 97/98 came on February 28th-March 1st and April 14th-15th. Personally deep snow's lost its appeal now I'm living in a place that I know can't handle it properly, but one day of 15cm or so, deep enough to get a day off work and then 10-12C and nondescript every other day until spring would be fine by me - anything but the dreaded 3C and cold rain we had a lot of in February 2010.

I can't really recall one either though I'm pretty certain 97/98 was one. They are really as rare as hens teeth and before winter started I was determined this wouldn't be the case but I guess there's a first time for everything (or second time).

What's the big attraction of a decent snowfall if you live in a city? My experience of it - fortunately only in one winter season in my life - was that the novelty wore off very quickly indeed. Ice and slush as after-effects. No thanks!
