I don't know. Prior to this year, most people wouldn't have expected McConaughey to pull off roles like this and Dallas Buyers Club. Both he and Harrelson were known as being character actors or even comedic actors. Neither would have been lumped in with Daniel Day-Lewis. Now that the show has a reputation for quality, sure it'll pull higher profile actors, but I bet a lot of those higher-profile actors passed when True Detective was in pre-production and their agents called about it.
(And I still disagree with you on John Travolta. He's a joke. )
Yes. I don't really care for romantic comedies, and I associated MM with that genre. I did see Woody in Natural Born Killers.
I don't think it was him acting poorly in "Homeland" so much as the character being totally unlikable. To the extent that he made me hate him, I think he did a good job.

Oh OK, thanks. I missed that. I'm going to watch it all over again all episodes---I loved it that much, and I want to see what I missed.
This show has ruined everything else for me on TV. All shows seem like pointless, superficial, drivel to me now, compared to this season of True Detective. Especially the big networks, just a bunch of crap on TV now. The premium cable networks are crushing it, good to see.

Agreed! I feel the same way and hope this trend continues.

yes!!!!!
For the last 8 weeks, I found myself not even really caring/invested in The Walking Dead anymore, just watching it to get it overwith and then on to TD. LOL.
That's so interesting--all of a sudden the bar has been set way higher! Now that we have seen magnificent TV, we will judge the rest by the TD standard (for a while longer, anyway). "Justified" still holds up, I think, and so will "Game of Thrones" (I don't watch "Walking Dead"). But those who predicted that really great entertainment would be found on TV more so than at the movies were right! And TD has invented a new format--a short, concluded season/long miniseries. We'll see many copycat shows within the next few years, I think. Maybe some will be of high quality. Be that as it may, we have just witnessed something genuinely new and exciting. Whenever the DVD set becomes available, I'm going to own it!
