I could see Kilmer taking a shot at True Detective.
I like it.
I could definitely see him (re)teamed with Kurt Russell or Robert Downey Jr.
I agree with the other posters who noted that this could definitely attract other high-profile actors/actresses.
The season is short, it reaches a huge audience and it's something different.
And, if they are all given executive producing credit, makes it even more attractive.
I enjoyed the series. The acting was really good, but then I like both those guys so I was in anyway. The ending left me wanting more and feeling like I missed something! haha But isn't that way an investigation like that would end? Lots of questions, and not enough answers. Like he said, we got our guy....
As to the next series, it's difficult to catch lighting in a bottle twice. It's going to have to be completely different. I like the idea of 2 female leads. That would definitely get a different vibe straight away.
Quality show. Very subtle and slow by today's BB standards. I like that and is a good change of pace. It's more real.
It's clear they are trying to draw actors who are on the radar. They pulled Harrelson and McConaughey because they are great well-known actors. These actors were the main reason most people gave True Detective a try. Everyone was fascinated and thrilled at the chance to watch great actors for more than 1-1/2 hours in a movie. HBO has created great work with obscure actors, but it's clear they're trying something different with this show by bringing in heavy hitters.
I don't know. Prior to this year, most people wouldn't have expected McConaughey to pull off roles like this and Dallas Buyers Club. Both he and Harrelson were known as being character actors or even comedic actors. Neither would have been lumped in with Daniel Day-Lewis. Now that the show has a reputation for quality, sure it'll pull higher profile actors, but I bet a lot of those higher-profile actors passed when True Detective was in pre-production and their agents called about it.
(And I still disagree with you on John Travolta. He's a joke. )

Why don't you guys like Damian Lewis? I'm not suggesting him but just wondering.
I recently endured way too much of his horrible acting in Homeland.
