Masters isn't the only major with an (almost) life long exemption. I am pretty sure the British you are exempt until age 60 (correct me if I'm wrong) and/or the US Open. Not sure about the PGA.
If you win the British Open, you're in the Open until you're 60, and you're in the Masters, U.S. Open and PGA Championship for five years
If you win the PGA Championship, you're in the PGA Championship for life, basically, and you're in the Masters, U.S. Open and Open Championship for five years

The Masters used to have some real old fossils playing. I remember seeing Doug Ford playing - must have been over 70yrs old....within the last 10 yrs or so the Masters has kind of gently been asking older players to consider sitting it out. I was kind of controversial when golf talked about "the letter".....
okay before I'm being jumped on, my post about Norman-Faldo was while I was watching the DVR broadcast today and didn't see that Reed's lead was decreased with Rory's final hole birdie ....Reed had a five stroke lead when I posted.
Reed could become the first player to score 4 rounds in the 60's at the Masters, Tiger never even did that, but came close twice missing by one stroke, in 1997: 70-66-65-69 and 2001: 70-66-68-68.
He’s brash and alienating. He can be a troll. He’s the kind of guy who begins sentences with “I’m from Texas.” Britain’s Telegraph named him the most hated player in golf. A 2015 ESPN players poll named him the second most-disliked man on tour (behind Bubba Watson) and that was before many of his shenanigans. He often plays practice rounds by himself and has been known to curse on TV and snap at fans. The fact that wore red on Sundays annoyed fans, either because they thought it was cocky (it was) or derivative (that was the point).

I'm familiar with all that. And the reactions it got from Player, Palmer...and some other guys.
Player made sure he got the "record" for most played Masters.
Billy Casper was one recipient of the 2001 letter posted. Probably the best golfer on earth for a stretch of the late 60s, won the Masters in 1970, and one of the greatest putters of all time, yet rarely gets mentioned with the likes of Nicklaus or Palmer. Doug Ford, 1957 champion and to date the oldest surviving Masters winner, also received the letter, withdrew and never appeared at Augusta again.
Let the geezers play. The past champions are a separate category in determining the tourney field, and they don't "take a place" from anyone. If they don't play, or play a few holes and withdraw, it's not like someone else suddenly gets to play instead. I just hope by the time Tiger is struggling to finish a first round, and shoot under 90 if he does, that he's not still the center of attention.
