You can play fun competitive golf for years without being properly set up. Buy a decent set ..make sure they fit your height and have at it.
one can buy a decent set second hand.....a decent set of new clubs runs $500+ (irons, driver, woods/hybrid, bag)....doubt if a newbie golfer who is just starting wants to lay out that kind of money - Golfers fall for the latest tech gimmicks and toss aside their recently purchased clubs all the time (trade in) -----good for newbie golfers looking to find a set - best way to find a good set is a golf big box store that offers second hand sets....Golfsmith used to do that but I think Dicks just bought them up.
As a total beginner I think renting clubs is good option. See if you even enjoy the game. But if buying definitely go for a low priced beginner set or used. No need to dump a lot of money on clubs when you start, or ever if you only play now and then.
TW still holding strong 3rd round....expected more this week, but maybe he's a tad tired.
