I'm not sure if this has been debated or not but why not toll 95 as you enter SC on both ends. Give cars with Sc Nc and Ga plates and trucks a pass and toll everyone else. Those who are coming to Myrtle Beach and Charleston will not stop comin simply because of a $1 toll, and we can make money off of those who pass through to put back into our roads. And hey, if they choose to go to Florida over Sc in protest, they will have to give us $1 or spend $40 in gas getting around it!

I know this is far fetched, but I think it's a great idea because let's be honest, if your from NY and spending all of that money to come here, another $1 isn't going to really matter and all they'll do is complain driving down 501 to give us more money in Myrtle!

[quote=hatterasjack;32664579]'Justina4' must not have traveled I-85 between Charlotte and Atlanta lately. That highway is a zoo at any time. It's only 6 lanes, in SC, between Spartanburg and Greenville and it's congested during rush hour. It probably carries more traffic than any long highway in the state.

Justina4's comment about 526 in Charleston not having any place to extend to. Well that's just an unresearched comment. Originally the highway was planned to continue across 17 and the Stono River, the tip of Johns Island, onto James Island just west of the County park, up along Central Park Road and connect to the James Island Connector. The grading already exists at the ends of both highways. You can probably find maps showing this leg in the Post and Courier archives. I think it's past time to get it done.

I used to commute b/t Greenville and Spartanburg, I ddin't remember it being bad, it does back up some at the 385 exit heading south on 85 and at the Pelham road exist heading north but it is typical rush hour traffic in my view.

I didn't know baout that plan for 526 extending out to James Island but is that really needed?

For hurricane evac, yes.

Doesn't matter.

Saying no to hurricane evac planning is like saying, "10000 are killed, but hey, it's only every 15 years"

I'm not saying 10000 people are killed every hurricane, I'm just saying just because it doesn't happen often doesn't make the routes unnecessary.

Proper planning and coordinated efforts to get people out are arguably more effective than a simple road. Sure they would work best together, but that is a poor excuse for needing a new roadway. I'm not saying it's not needed. But don't give that as a reason.

That IS the reason. If you research it, that's the reason. Plan all you want, when people are given the option of when to leave, they will wait until the last minute, hence the need for the road.

As bad as hurricanes are, Katrina resulted in about 1,800 deaths, hardly the numbers cited. The current Charleston road system is sufficient with proper planning and coordination. If people wait till the last minute to evacuate, that is not the responsibility of all of SC to overbuild roads. If you build roads based on events that happen every 25 years, locals and tourists should be responsible for funding.

Oh I am sorry. I didn't realize you guys were engineers that studied and analyzed the traffic here for the past 15 years. I'll trust the ones that were paid to do the analysis over armchair quarterbacks any day.

I will too, that is why the I20/26 interchange is SCDOT's top priority.
