I've been living in Greenville for a few years and I am only starting to pick up on the divisions there are between the regions of South Carolina. My friend from Myrtle Beach made a comment about how he was really surprised that the Upstate was becoming such a hotbed for microdistilleries. Apparently people in the Lowcountry think that the Upstate is strongly religious and socially conservative and wouldn't be into moonshinin' .

Which got me wondering - and let's keep this civil and good-humored - what are the other stereotypes that exist between the three regions?

I grew up in Beaufort, and we used to visit my stepmother's family in Greenville. I lived it but there was a sense that they (the extended family) were more religious. They also had a bluegrass bags in the family and some if the women clogged. Most if the relatives were older folks, though.

I loved visitting, though. We used to pick muscadines in the backyard.

I love all the areas, and find everybody friendly. As South Carolinians we all need to stick together. That being said, I love moonshine.

My family in the Upstate (Simpsonville, Mauldin, Fountain Inn, Boiling Springs) isn't as close to each other as my family in the Aiken area. I also find people in general from there to be more standoffish when first meeting them, takes a while for them to warm up.

The people I know in Lowcountry (Summerville, Goose Creek, West Ashley) are very high strung. Constantly on the go, involved in something, lots of drama. I would also say that some are more devout in their faith, but practice mainline/traditional denominations whereas the people I know in the Upstate are either Baptists or the new non-denominational contemporary type churches.

Lowcountry people don't open their mouths wide enough when they talk. Upstate people open theirs too wide. Midlands people open theirs just right.

You are an expert on when people are opening their mouths just right, no doubt.

I don't think most people in any city of SC spend much time thinking about people in the other cities. Most of us have friends/family scattered throughout the state. I don't think there is much difference in types of people in any city in SC. You have a variety of people in any city. Try to l ump them all in one category is silly.

And you are in the case of having a deformation of yours, if I remember you stating correctly.
