Why are we spending many billions more on an unwinable war in Afganistan, yet neglect our own countrymen, refusing to stop illegal immigration.

I used to follow conspiracy theories and find them fascinating, and some like 9/11 somewhat credible. You don't seem to be grasping one possibility and that is that getting Trump in the White House was part of the plan. Having such an incompetent, immoral, rural, racist Russian backed President will create such a strong counter reaction that power will shift sharply back to the left and a lot of his supporters will be forever discredited. Have you ever considered that?
I feel sorry for the invaders who were told that all they needed to do was make it to the border and they would be allowed into the country. To me, there is a profound difference between someone who is leaving to find a better life, and someone who is fleeing to save their life. If they fear for their lives, why don't they go to a country other than the U.S.?
About 60% choose to stay in Mexico, where they at least speak the language. The other 40% continue on to the US.

We once had regulars here on the SS&P board who were liberal trolls. Some of us had the sense to put them on Ignore; many others refused to. They just kept on engaging them in chit-chat and the convos went on and on, bickering and fighting. It was a very unpleasant place to be.

Yes, hostile invaders are a real concern. They are already a concern in border areas, where their militia is funded by drug war income. The border is handy for them because if legal heat gets too much, they can just duck across the border and disappear.
The Wall is the fantasy of a draft dodger with no concept of military tactics. A wall is a diffuse target that can only be maintained by defending the entire length with massive resources, most of which will never be used. It can be breached anywhere by stealth, rapid deployment of a point attack, or both.
It's pretty plain that the border wall with Mexico is a survivalist program. As much as they try to deny global warming, rich people well know that it is happening, and the first areas to become uninhabitable will be the tropics. They want a defensible barrier where they can hold off tens of millions of refugees fleeing an ecological disaster. Essentially, they want to make America into a gated community.
