IBM scientists Wednesday April 29 unveiled two critical advances towards creating a practical quantum computer by detecting and measuring both kinds of quantum errors simultaneously. They also demonstrated a new, square quantum bit circuit design that they suggest is the only physical architecture that could successfully scale to larger dimensions.
Quantum computers promise to open up new capabilities in the fields of optimization and simulation that are not possible using today’s computers. If a quantum computer could be built with just 50 quantum bits (qubits), no combination of today’s TOP500 supercomputers could successfully outperform it, the scientists say.
The IBM breakthroughs, described in an open-access paper in the April 29 issue of the journal Nature Communications, show for the first time the ability to detect and measure the two types of quantum errors (bit-flip and phase-flip) that will occur in any real quantum computer*.

Moore's law will be around for another 10 years then from what I have read we will go to the 3D chips. Well we are already moving in that direction anyway as 30% of new chips are 3D.

Well, there's a limit to how big a 3-D chip can get ...... apparently dissipating the heat generated is a real problem.
3D chips is not the last paradigm to allow computers to advance exponentially just the latest. From what I read it looks like quantum computers could come after 3D chips in the next 20 years.
Here is what is just on the horizon and if you keep in mind this technology is advancing exponentially what it will be like in 15 years when I argue we will have hit the singularity.

IBM takes one small step for quantum mechanics, one giant leap for computing
Things are going faster now. Plus this will be nothing like what we will see in the 2020's.
IBM has announced it’s surmounted one of the biggest hurdles on the road toward creating the world’s first true usable quantum computer. A number of analysts have predicted that the jump from traditional computing to quantum chips could be on par with the revolution we saw when the world moved from vacuum tubes to integrated circuits back in the early sixties. The reason for this increased power is that quantum computers are capable of processing multitudes more calculations than traditional CPUs at once, because instead of a transistor existing in one of either two states — on, or off — independently of one another, a quantum bit can be both at the same time.
