But Riverside is twice the size of Fontana too. That's like comparing California to Vermont.

You apparently do not know what "crime rate" means. It is the number of crimes per population which accounts for the difference in size. Crime rate is typically the number of crimes per 100,000 habitants.

300k vs 200k isn't double.

I understand what you are saying, and I do understand what crime rate means. But, all I was trying to say is that Riverside has 100,000 more residents than Fontana, which would result in more crimes being tallied, even though they base crimes per 100,000 residents.

Here's Fontana's data
2010 Crime (Actual Data)* Incidents
Aggravated Assault 476
Arson 13
Burglary 804
Forcible Rape 37
Larceny and Theft 2,130
Motor Vehicle Theft 747
Murder and Manslaughter 6
Robbery 240
Crime Rate (Total Incidents) 4,484
Property Crime 3,681
Violent Crime 759

Here's Riverside's Crime Data
2010 Crime (Actual Data)* Incidents
Aggravated Assault 859
Arson 49
Burglary 2,068
Forcible Rape 78
Larceny and Theft 6,434
Motor Vehicle Theft 1,461
Murder and Manslaughter 9
Robbery 502
Crime Rate (Total Incidents) 12,027
Property Crime 9,963
Violent Crime 1,448

So the numbers do speak for themselves if you are looking at crimes per 100,000 people.

avoid most of San Bernardino (north SB by the Cal State San Bernardino is ok i used to live there) Mentone , Hemet, Moreno Valley, Parts of Lake Elsinore and South Fontana.. Im not too sure about the high desert , never been there... I would recommend parts of Upland and Redlands, Grand Terrace , Riverside.

Default Best Areas to Avoid

After living in the Inland Empire for 27 years I can tell you 1st hand the only areas to live in are Devore, Verdemont Heights in San Bernardino. San Bernardino Crime is off the charts. East Highland only, Redlands is most desirable, Yucaipa, Calimesa, Cherry Valley are rural so if you like country these would be ok. Loma Linda, Grand Terrace and East Colton near Fiesta Village. Avoid at all cost Moreno Valley, San Bernardino, Rialto, Fontana are all garbage.

Redlands and Loma Linda are comparable to some places in SB and much safer in most parts.

Redlands is very bike friendly, Trader Joes, community gets together for music at the bowl, young college town with some old money. It's clean, they care about their city and the people are a mix.

Loma Linda is Seventh Day Adventist community but isn't 100% SDA. It's quieter, slower and more known for health foods and churches along with the LLUMC and the VA.

Colton...pfffttt..parts are good, parts are bad. Grand Terrace is out here too. imho the smaller towns are better than the actual city of SB - I know nothing of Banning/Beaumont and Yucaipa or the high desert (victorville hesperia)

I live in Reche Canyon so I got the best of all worlds. I'm 2 miles in a rural area. I can drive 4 minutes and be at my local Staters, Rite Aid and Walmart.

FWIW, in regards to S.B. county - Upland and Rancho Cucamonga anywhere north of Foothill Blvd. are pretty good and safe.
