I think what you remember is the Dunderbox, (not sure on the spelling) they served German food and beer and maybe wine.

My father was a Luby's manager for 30 years. He quit about 10 years ago, when those Pappa's bought Luby's they took a Texas traditional company and flushed it down the crapper. Very sad considering their history in San Antonio.

It was called Mr. Dunderbak's Bavarian Pantry. They had the best corned beef sandwiches I've ever eaten.

All the civic minded "improvements" eventually killed off the small businesses. Downtown has no character or charm any more.

I remember growing up North Star had lots of charm to it with HEB, Walgreens, toy box, Joske's. Now whats the point crappy stores everywhere you look, no including Macy's or Dillards.

Great article Mud. It only shows how the city has destroyed the very fiber of downtown in the name of progress. All those little businesses contributed to the inner-city charm. How sad.

Is there any census lists or phone book white pages for 1950 for San Antonio?
Trying to locate the husband of my deceased Aunt.
His name would be Louis or Arlis L. Windham. Was in the SA area in the 1948 to 1952 time period.
Any ideas of where I can start looking?
Thanks,
Ron

I attended school with some Windhams. One of their sisters worked for the Southside Reporter paper.
