2 blocks north of Rigsby on W.W.White there was a big grocery store

has been vacant for at least 10 years. jg1208

Christies...now THAT was a classy place. And good food. San Antonio has lost quite a few gems.

My favorite Places to eat in SA in the 60s through the 70s Not in any order. We did not get to eat out but once or twice a month. Maybe, this is why they are such Special Memories, and tasted so good.

Christies
Bud Jones
Burger Chef
Jack in the Box
Texan
EL Rancho
Tip Top
Pig Stand
Bill Miller
The Flame
First Mate (The only other place that had the same tasting fish was,
The Little Fish and Chicken Shack, outside of Captain Jim's )
Martha's (When it was out in the Boonies)
Little Red Barn

High School (1980 's) is when the Mexican Food bug hit me.

I ate at Don Pedros, Papa Taco, and Minute Taco All the time.

King Wah was one of our favorites. 410 and Harry Wurzbach.

And Los Patios for special occasion buffets. They are still open, but somehow lost some of the lure after the flooding in 98 when they closed the Brazoria. We still love to go out on the grounds and walk down to the banks of the Salado and watch the ducks and turtles....and frequently the peacocks!
The drive is paved now and parking is better. Still a lovely place to visit.

Thanks Catriona. If anyone else remembers anymore, let us know.

Default King Wah

The King Wah mention on 410 And Harry Wurzbach...was this the same as the chain that was in Windsor and Ingram Malls? Where there any other locations?

I really liked their red sweet/sour sauce.

I remember they had these funky little chicken drumsticks. It was a long bare bone with a deep fried chicken ball at the end. I always thought the one at the 4-10 location and the ones in the malls were related, but I could be wrong. I'll check in the Newspaper Archives tomorrow.

Looks like King Wah was originally on Bandera Road before 4-10. This add is from 1972

Okay, the King Wah at 4-10 and Nacodoches, Bandera, and the one's in Ingram and Windsor Malls were all owned by the same people. They were owned by two brothers, Maximo and Alfredo Leon. By 1976 they had restaurants at Harry Wurzbach and 4-10, Bandera, Windsor Mall, and in Houston. They started out as just regular Chinese restaurants, but as suburban malls boomed in the late 70's early 80's, the brothers took advantage of this trend and created a fast-food version of their menu specific to those venues.
