I live in Perinton and pay $8,000+ in property taxes on a $250,000-300,000 home. This doesn't even cover garbage pick-up! These huge tax bills will negatively affect the rate at which homes appreciate. Think about it! After 10 years of living here, I will have forked over 80,000+ in cold hard cash while the value of my home has stagnated or maybe squeaked out some small percentage increase. This is not the place to settle down!

Let's not forget about the state vehicle inspections, exhorbidant tag fees, one of the highest state income taxes and sales taxes in the country, and the obnoxious bottle return fees. Don't ask about the cost of heating your home with natural gas either, unless an additional $300-400 per month for 6 or 7 month a year doesn't bother you.

NY is tax hell and I look forward to leaving as soon as possible.

Yup and when they get to their new state and have to pay a lot to register a car(god forbid that it is new), that there are taxes that are increasing and the home price is much more for a similar house in many, if not most other states, I wonder how they will react. A lot of times, things actually even out. It's just that you pay in other ways.

It's funny, when I was looking to move to Rochester about three years ago I came here and read posts about how horrible it is, on and on... I didn't bother posting myself.

I have now lived here three years, and I have had a WONDERFUL time living here, for the most part, despite the high taxes and all the things the naysayers post. Every city has its negatives, but I was able to find ample positives about Rochester - I have enjoyed the museums, the art gallery and there are some GREAT restaurants here, not to mention some beautiful natural scenery.

Now I am on the move again (to Toronto) and when I went to that board, the majority of the posts are complaining how awful it is there... I expect to have a positive experience there, too - I make a huge effort to experience what each city I live in has to offer... I've lived in many places and have enjoyed all of them in different ways.

It bothers me that people take such great pleasure in belittling places... it's a waste of time! Why not try and do something to make living in said city a positive one instead of sitting at home miserable. there are always going to be negatives... but on the flip side, there are ALWAYS going to positives. Try and ENJOY those!! Actively seek them out!! I guarantee they are there!!

Don't get me wrong, I agree property taxes around here are ridiculous and getting them under control needs to be THE top priority of anyone who wants to make progress in the area; but to dwell on them and just say/imply that it is totally pointless and dumb for anyone to enjoy living here is just a tired and unnecessary argument.

Let's not forget homes which are way over-assessed in some parts of the metro.

Considering taxes are one of the largest problems with this state in general, I think we should do more than dwell on them. I like it here too, but the taxes, and not just here in Roch, are stupidly high.
