But Apple likely picked Austin over a potential Raleigh-area site and other possible contenders because its low cost-of-living and hip reputation makes it easier to recruit needed tech-savvy workers.

Austin's "light rail" line is sort of a joke (actually more of a commuter rail line). Doesn't run on Sundays, Saturday is night service only and the last train Monday-Thursday leaves at 6:30 PM (and when it does run, frequency is every 30-60 min)

Though I’m not convinced Apple has transit super high on their list, you know what you can do once you have the rail infrastructure? Get more trainsets and run them more often. When you have jack squat like we do here...

Well it sounds like they are running their trains on existing freight track (similar situation to Raleigh) so it’s not as simple as running more trains. They’d have to build additional infrastructure/tracks to run more frequent service (sounds like they are working on additional sidings for now to accommodate more trips).

Agreed, transit is clearly not important to Apple though.

That's a good hunch, considering all of numerous light rail/commuter rail lines running in, through and around their space ship in Cupertino (hint, there are none, the closest, the Caltrain @ Lawrence Station is 2.5 miles away and the closest VTA light rail station is 4.5 miles away).

We discussed this before with the differences between Apple and Amazon. Apple is definitely the 'burb/office park type of company with people driving their electric and hybrid cars to work. I'm not saying Apple is anti-mass transit, sure if a light rail/commuter rail line is close or next to a potential office site, great, if not, it's not a deal breaker.

But Apple likely picked Austin over a potential Raleigh-area site and other possible contenders because its low cost-of-living and hip reputation makes it easier to recruit needed tech-savvy workers, said Tom Stringer, head of site selection for the business consulting firm BDO.

"It's like very few other small locations that can replicate the connectivity, the hipness the opportunities of some of the large coastal cities," Stringer said. "So, you get the workforce that you want, and the Research Triangle-area just has not done that yet. I think there are really some workforce and some lifestyle issues."

This reminds me of the Christopher Walken cowbell skit on SNL, the Triangle "We need more hipsters"!

Cool. So if you live in Austin you can commute by rail. if you live in the Triangle, well...you can't.

How to commute by rail from your house to your workplace or shopping/school/hospital? At least, you still need to drive to a rail station, park there, then take the rail, arrive at a rail station which is next to your workplace/shopping/school/hospital, then either walk or take taxi to your final destination.

Unless like Tokyo or New York City, which already have networked public transportation (that means at any spot there is a public transportation station which is 10 to 15 minutes walk away), there is no way for average Americans to use commute by rail.

Think about how small the average house/apartment is in Tokyo or New York city, you will never like the idea of rail.

Actually, I used to walk (about a minute or 2) to the light rail station, get off the train and walk less than 5 minutes to my office. I didn't live in Tokyo or NYC. Nor Raleigh.

And I don't recall mentioning this was option for "average Americans" whatever that means. I believe my comments were in regard to Austin and the Triangle.
