A man parked his truck on a country road outside Turlock Saturday night, removed a baby boy from a car seat and then beat the child to death in the street, fighting off passersby who tried to stop him until he was gunned down by a police officer whose helicopter landed in a nearby pasture, police said today.
The 27-year-old suspect, who lived in Turlock, died almost immediately where he fell. The child, who according to police appeared to be 12 to 24 months old, was rushed to a hospital but was soon pronounced dead as well.
Police officials declined to identify the man and said they were not yet certain who the child was - or in what way, if any, he was related to his attacker. The Stanislaus County coroner's office told police that the agency may have to identify the boy through a DNA test because he was beaten beyond recognition.Man kills baby and is shot to death by police (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/06/15/BAJT119MI5.DTL&tsp=1 - broken link)
I don't get it... a dozen or so people and nobody could stop one guy??? I think some of these people are more interested in watching than actually stopping the person... I would of beaten the crap out of him as soon as I saw what was happening...

It's CA, what do you expect?
They tried to stop him? What in God's name does it take to stop someone? And what do they do? Justify the idiocy of bystanders that allowed it to happen.

I guarantee they're all at home tonight talking about how "powerless" they were. Cowards.
That state is a national embarrassment. What a culture.

Wow, what a logical and well thought out argument! Clearly, stereotyping 37,000,000 people, more then 12% of the entire U.S. population, based on one incident, is level-headed intellectualism at its best. Especially when the specifics of the incident are unclear, and the article clearly stated that bystanders did attempt to help and were fought off. Obviously, nothing like this has ever happened anywhere else in the United States (where a murder was committed and those present were unsuccessful in stopping it), and your crack research techniques and conclusion generating abilities have saved the day. Because of your outstanding work in the fields of sociology, cross-cultural studies, and the effects of geopolitical boundaries on group psychology, it is now clear to all that the entire state of California, even those several hundred miles away when the incident took place, are guilty by association. Despite the countless number of well researched, well funded, and well thought out arguments/essays/news reports/doctoral dissertations outlining massive cultural diversity levels within California, you were able to research and carefully analyze the incident within less than 24 hours and eloquently articulate a definitive counter argument in less than 60 words, showing everybody that, not only are the bystanders in question cowardly, but that their cowardice is the product of a grand cultural identity within California!
Bravo.

WTF, I hoe you are not talking about the police here. THey seemed to have done everything in their power to help in a manner that didnt put anymore lives at risk.
While it is illegal I might have shot him some where that allows for the the pain to be pretty high, then waited a minute or 5 to call for medical help.
This is a 12 to 24 month old baby, it is defenseless. COME ON. It has dont nothing to anyone. I just cant imagine what was going through his mind as this man is hitting him. It pisses me off we have people like this in our society. If you harm a baby you deserve to die, and I hope it hurts.
