I actually think we can learn something from Canada.
The reason that Canada does not have a real “illegal immigrants sneaking in and stealing our jobs” problem is because Canadian laws were actually designed to prevent this. Everyone with a legal right to work has a Social Insurance Number and you need to present this number for every job you work at - even day labor job placement firms and farmers looking for pickers require it. The reason that they require it is because the company can be charged with a crime for hiring someone without a legal right to work in Canada.
No one is going to hire someone illegally if it is going to cost you a lot of money in fines, maybe shut down your company and might even get you a stint in jail.
You also need your SIN to open a bank account and get government identification. Without a bank account, most companies cannot pay you (because of direct deposit), you cannot rent an apartment because most places want postdated cheques in advance. Where do you live? Even cheque cashing services require some form of government ID.
That eliminates many of the jobs that illegal immigrants occupy in the USA. There is probably a small cash market but the difficulties are large and the returns are low.
Yes, once we find a few politicians with the backbone to pass legislation on comprehensive immigration reform, I am all for sending a few CEO's to Club Fed for a 30-60 day vacay as an example to those who continue to hire illegally.

The OP does actually have a very good question that is always ignored. How many immigrants is the right amount? How is that determined? Conservatives always say there are too many, but how do you know? How do you determine how many we should allow in? How do we know if we should double the amount let in or half it?
There are pages and pages of Federal laws written and passed by both Democrats and Republicans. I would say that was meant to determine the amount.
When they can neither refute nor reply honestly, what do Democrat fanatics do instead?

See, you kinda prove my point. No one (here) knows the optimum amount of immigrants and yet they argue and moan over them incessantly regardless of whether we truly need more or fewer of of them. It seems pointless when no one is working with relevant facts.
My guess (no exaggeration) is their goal is to make illegal aliens the majority of the USA population by the end of Bidens 4 years.
There are about 330 million legal citizens in the USA today. By the end of 4 years they will count the illegals as citizens and it will be a big “Surprise!” we finally managed to perform an accurate census. It will be around 600 million by then. Then come the masses of their babies.
