Thank you California

More are re-routing their ships and now 9-10 idle ships are sitting off NJ/NY ports.
There is also a shortage of about 80,000 truck drivers across the nation including east coast ports, driving from the east coast to the west would make matters worse.

Part of the pending infrastructure bill includes workforce development for drivers but that doesn't solve the immediate problem.

Governor Phil Murphy discussed the issue Wednesday, saying that while other ports "are in chaos," ships are not piling up off the coast of New Jersey.

He warned, however, that it is inevitable that will change.
LA and Long Beach handle 40% of dry goods.

Probably in the middle somewhere.

I have no idea if Newark is the main port in New Jersey, or if their other ports could be having problems.

There was a 60K shortage before the pandemic.
CA new DMV law went into effect in 2020 and that I having a rather large impact on trucking.

Oh yeah..a bill in Congress will make people want to be truckers ? Get real. That money will disappear.

The problem is not only in CA, or heck, not even only in the US, the shipping problems are worldwide.
California has special rules that price truckers out of the state. It wouldn't matter if there were 100,000 new truckers in the U.S. all of a sudden

UK is tinkering with having prisoners on work release driving trucks. Somewhat amusingly in the story the prisoner featured is in prison for smuggling drugs in his truck.

I don't think the USA would dare try that. Too much risk for escape.

No,they dont have their own ports unloading goods.
But some light items can be brought in by air.

That's not a ticket to the good life within an easy commute to the Los Angeles Long Beach ports
