The west coast has some unique problems.

A new DMV law went into effect in 2020 regarding the big rigs and their engines so that puts limits on which trucks can travel in CA to the ports to get the containers

Another was the unions and only working 1 shift while the container ships piled up along the coast since January.

None of our ports have embraced automation...fear of job loss.
Rail has been cut back over the years.
JIT depends on timely deliveries.

Los Angeles and Long Beach are the main receiving ports for our dry goods and there is a massive backup of ships never seen before ...yes this is a first.

Walmart, Costco, Home Depot and Target among others have chartered their own ships to get their goods.
So, if you see your store shelves "full" it could be due to the chain chartering their own ships.

"Chartering vessels is just one example of investments we've made to move products as quickly as possible," said Joe Metzger, U.S. executive vice president of supply-chain operations at Walmart, which has hired a number of vessels this year.

Didn't we try something like this back in the 60's? It was called The Great Society and it was supposed to end poverty.

I haven't figured out how this works. Sure, if they charter their own ships, they can presumably get the ships loaded faster. But once they arrive off the coast, don't they have to wait in the same lines as all the other ships? Do they have their own special ports or something?

No..have the ships go to the east coast.

It's Los Angeles and Long Beach with the 160 ships sitting idle.
Thank you California

More are re-routing their ships and now 9-10 idle ships are sitting off NJ/NY ports.

Would you like to point out how the Trump crowd are snowflakes? Most Trump people I know are tough SOBs.

There's no free market when the government is paying people to not work. Stop handouts and go back to a free market and the shortages will disappear.

With the mods permission I’d like to pick up the Trump crowd in here, stop at Sherwin Williams to get some black paint, soak ‘em in it, then drop them off in my old ghetto. Now go survive by not breaking any rules that will get you killed (what you folks call street smarts) while maintaining some semblance of morality. You know, while the government pumps drugs and guns into the hood and is just one of several street gangs in the complex world of thuggery.
Wow how delusional can one be?

California ports aren't the only ones facing record backlogs of cargo ships — 3 other US ports have hit historic highs

Ports in New Jersey and New York, as well as in Texas and Georgia, have seen record pileups.
Turnaround time for container ships has increased across the country.
Southern California ports face the greatest delays as they handle nearly half of all US imports.

So which news is the right news ?

https://abc7ny.com/port-of-newark-su...hips/11120230/

Governor Phil Murphy discussed the issue Wednesday, saying that while other ports "are in chaos," ships are not piling up off the coast of New Jersey.

He warned, however, that it is inevitable that will change.
LA and Long Beach handle 40% of dry goods.
