I've never given it much thought, but I came across a message board where the subject came up. What do you think? Is calling a black person coloured or an East Asian person Oriental racist or just antiquated?

Oriental is a rug, not a person.

Not racist per se, just really, really dated as a result they can indicated to the listener an inability to come to grips with the social changes that have transpired since such terms were social acceptable.

Personally, I give an allowance based upon the the age of the speaker.

Exactly what I say. Oriental is a pretty archaic term, I wouldn't call it racist, but I preface this by noting that when someone requests that you use the proper term or identity with what they wish to be called, just do it out of common courtesy.

I've actually schooled a couple of people on these forums who got all bent out of shape for getting corrected on the proper and current term.

And context as well. The intent is more important than the term.

Wow... More and more new threads are race focused. Maybe we need a sub forum...

The term colored was deemed inappropriate decades ago. Use of it today would be offensive and could perhaps be considered racist since it makes it sound like the person using it would prefer to remain in a time when black people suffered greatly.

That's what I try to do too. Some people care and some don't. It's good policy to be as cautious as possible.

Yet, in the US, the NAACP has not changed it's name
