I hope you realize the exact opposite of what you said is true as well. Through the creation of "protected classes" Democrats not only have violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, they are now claiming those "protected classes" supersedes the constitutionally protected rights of everyone else.
"Why would anyone craft legislation sanctioning discrimination?"
A better question is why did Democrats violate the US Constitution and create a special group of people who can supersede the constitutionally protected rights of everyone else?
Christianity is indeed under attack in the US, and has been for decades. Sometimes deservedly so, and other times not. Whether you like it or not, the First Amendment is suppose to guarantee that "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;..." Since it has been well established that devote Christians have a particular religious aversion to homosexuality, it would be a violation of their constitutionally protected First Amendment right to force them to provide services to those they find "religiously objectionable."
Before you get any ideas that I am some kind of fundamentalist or even a Christian, I will inform you that I am neither. I acknowledge and respect the fact that ~90% of the population believes in some kind of deity. I do not happen to be among those ~90%, but I am not an anti-theist either. People have the inherent right, which is constitutionally protected, to believe or not believe anything they want. If you want people to have respect for your beliefs, you have to have a modicum of respect for theirs.
People have the right to believe in whatever kind of hate they want to. However, they don't have the right to use their business to discriminate.
They are not protected classes, they just want to be treated equally as should anyone under the constitution, these bills are attempting to make it legal to discriminate.
Christianity is not under attack, that is just an excuse.
You clearly have no clue what you are talking about.

You call it hate, they call it religious belief. No one should be able to force their beliefs on others.
You have an issue with Christianity using the law to force their beliefs on others, and that is understandable. I have that same issue. So then why would you support homosexuals using the law to force their beliefs on others? That seems rather hypocritical to me.

What "beliefs" are gay and lesbian people trying to 'force' on others?

That their sexual orientation supersedes all other individual rights. Homosexuals are spitting in the face of the religious, and have been doing so for decades, as if only their right to be homosexual mattered above all else.
Nobody should be forced to violate their own religious beliefs, for those who have them.
If a heterosexual wanted to buy some meat at the Kosher butcher on a Saturday, they would be SOL because the shop is closed. However, a homosexual (being a "protected class") can sue the crap out of the Jew for closing his business on the Sabbath and depriving them of a service.
"Protected classes" are an anathema to the US Constitution and equal protection under the law. It creates a caste system that is not suppose to exist in the US. If you do not fall into a "protected class," then you must be "unclean" and certainly unworthy of having your rights protected.

If ANYONE wanted to buy something that is not being sold or shop when the store is closed they would be SOL. That is not discrimination, that is everyone being treated equally.
Now, if the heterosexual wanted to buy meat at a kosher market, and the owner said "we won't sell meat to you, but we will to that guy over there" then that would be discrimination.
Examples.
Shop closed. No discrimination, because no one can shop there.
Shop open, but won't sell to person A, but will sell to person B. Discrimination.
Shop doesn't sell widgets. No discrimination, because the shop does not sell widgets to anyone.
Shop sells widgets, but will not sell to person A but will sell them to person B. Discrimination.

Requiring businesses to treat everyone the same doesn't violate their rights, refusing to sell to a customer based on race, religion or lifestyle is discrimination. They are not being asked to violate their religion, just to treat everyone equally.
The attack on Christianity is pure nonsense that was created but the extreme right wing factions, the sponsors of the legislation couldn't even come up with an example other than it was preemptive

You missed the point entirely. Protected classes are not interested in being equal. By definition they are superior, or "protected," above all others. A heterosexual could not sue, but homosexuals certainly can. If this was about equality then homosexuals would have gone to any one of a dozen non-Christian bakers to have their wedding cake made. They specifically targeted a Christian business, knowing well in advance what the outcome would be. So this clearly has nothing to do with equality, or there would not be protected classes in the first place. This is about forcing Christians to accept something that contradicts their religious beliefs, and that is all this is about.
Like I said, "protected classes" are now the new Superior Citizen, and the religious (Christians in particular) are are simply scum that must obey the demands of the "protected classes." If this continues I would not be the least bit surprised to see an increase in violence. You can only push people so far.
