There is no way for any nominee to know what they are talking about on every topic. Even in cases where they do know, it probably makes a better sound bite to blame/bate/ switch the other team than attempt to educate the masses who are likely going to vote for their team, anyway.
The campaign process is way too long. Why not go from primary to election in 2 weeks with a few debates thrown in for good measure. No need to turn it into a spectacle and drag this out for 6 months with fact checkers and spinners. No need for nominees to fly off into distant lands for $50K a plate dinners to raise more money to blast the other team.
