And great, you made a post, which many people didn't agree with because you were wanting to take away a fundamental right, so they posted in your thread. I predict this thread will close or fade away in a few days and you will return to your tiny cramped apartment in the polluted hole that is Hong Kong and no one will remember you in a few days.
The statistic of $8000 -10,000 has been widely quoted as the cost of car ownership for the average American. Do you want me to find the source for that? If you are good at searching the web, you may find it more quickly than I can.

(in edit):

Okay, I found this:

COSTS Per the Sprawling from Grace film

Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPS1y81b1Bw&wide=1

Stats, about 30-35 minutes in:
=====
+ 3 gallons per person per day x 365 = 1095 gallons / 42= 26 bbls pa
+ At $4 per gallon, that would be $4,400 per annum - just for gasoline !*
+ 25% of disposable income on cars, most expensive system in the world
(up to 40% for lower income people)
+ No.2 cost is autos, after housing
+ People cite gasoline costs of $200-1,000 per month
+ Bill Clinton spoke about future "resource wars"

For many: "Every single trip must be made BY THE CAR"

*On top of the gasoline cost, you have to add:
+ Finance and capital cost
+ Repairs, tires, lubs, etc
+ Insurance costs
+ Parking, and tolls

It adds up fast, so do you really Doubt the $8,000 - 10,000 ?

By rail when he can. He regrets the limited choices he faces, and so do I.
The existing restrictions do not detract from the power of his message. Not for me.

That is because the minimum wage is $3.60 US but a 545 sq ft apartment costs about $4500 a month to rent. My guess is the majority that are earning that minimum wage live in abject poverty, they probably don't get anywhere close to having a spacious 5oo sq ft apartment.

I like this

The Employment of Young Persons (Industry) Regulations govern the employment conditions of young persons aged 15 to 17 in industrial undertakings. These young persons are not allowed to work more than eight hours a day and 48 hours a week.
Those 15 year olds working in the industrial factories can only work 48 hrs a week, great.

Yes, all of 1700 or so people gave up their citizenship in 2011, that is only 692,493 less than the number that became U.S. citizens.

There are almost no industrial factories left in HK, those jobs have all moved to China.

Most HK people work in service industries, like FIRE and hospitality

I think you need to listen to this podcast, to understand the concept more clearly than I can put it in a short post:
Mine is in *my* driveway, where it is staying. You made the huge error in describing what you think you want here. You would like better planned and laid out cities. O.K. that is great where feasible but in places like NYC there isn't a lot of room to move things.

5 years ago when I checked, about 300 people gave up citizenship - the numbers are increasing fast.

I reckon the incomes/wealth of the 1700 was probably more than the 700K odd coming in. If so, the net is making the country poorer.

Have you forgotten that many of those are coming across the border from a poorer southern neighbor? Many come, both legally and illegally, for the benefits they can pick up.

You said savings not cost, my car cost $21000 8 years ago, gas and upkeep probably averaged $3000 a year, that works out to $5625 a year, my cost didn't even reach what you claim the savings are.
If I rented a place in a walkable city my rent would probably be three to four times what my current mortgage payment is and I would need a metro card for the subway or bus. Add to that many of the "walkable" cities like NYC you are going to have to pay extra taxes for the pleasure of living there. I figure I would be down about $20,000 a year living in a "walkable city".
