A fundamental difference between Republicans and Democrats I can't really get past from an economic perspective.
A Republican will be happy for you that you became financially successful, and want to find a way to earn enough to achieve the same level of comfort
A liberal will be happy that you became financially successful, and want to find a way to have you give them enough to where they will be able to live the same level of comfort.
the top tax rate was 91% half a century ago. Like it or not, de facto redistribution goes hand-in-hand with progressive tax rates, and they have been progressive from their inception.
Very true. I don't understand why republican's don't understand that this was the tax policy in place back when we were a great country. We are no longer a great country.
I don't know about every state, but that's how it is in Florida, as well. Owners of multiple residences are only allowed to claim homestead exemption on one home. If you don't want to pay the extra rent to a homeowner, you might consider renting an apartment.

Don't you think I'm entitled to get my excess tax money back?

I think it is a spending problem. If our gov't was spending our tax $$ wisely then I might be onboard with you. But, to raise taxes in the name of "fairness" and then waste it all is a big NO in my book!

You live in Michigan which is a socialist state and needs to tax everything to death. You are living in your socialist paradise and should be happy about higher taxes.
Be a free man. Obviously, if you are renting, you did not study hard enough, choose the right major, or work hard enough to be a property owner. You have yourself to blame and the federal government will not save you, but will tax you further and further into poverty.
When will libs ever wake up. The best chance at being rich in the world has always been the US. With added taxes and regulations, we are GIVING UP FREEDOM and a chance at prosperity. The only thing that government guarantees will get you is a fast track to poverty.
Do you know anyone living off of government assistence who is wealthy and happy?
All the griping in the internet world is going to do squat if the person griping doesn't vote. Better yet, volunteer to work a phone bank. Offer to drive your neighbor to the polls.
We're getting about 10 calls a week at my house. All are from Democratic candidates. One call was a robocall poll from the Republican party. The Democrats are willing to do the dirty work and stuff envelopes and knock on the door to ask for votes.
If you (group "you" - not specifically Guamanians being "you") don't like that the Dems/Libs have created an entitlement society, if that's what you think is happening.... then get off the computer and go register voters. Spit spot. Only a few days left.
The youtube video of the woman yelling about her free Obama phone? What was she doing? Protesting on the street with a sign. Where did you see that video? Probably at home sitting down. Get it? The people who don't want her to have an Obama phone need get the lead out. Putting an empty chair in front of your house is NOT doing something to change things. It says "cranky Republican lives here".

I would hesitate to say that he has not worked hard enough just because he is a renter. We know nothing else about his situation for you to say that. And, renting isn't such a bad option in this market anyway. However, your comments on taxes were right on.
well, thats because defense is basically off the tables. Like I said, there are ways to cut spending without sacrificing the mission. We can cut civilian contractors (they are supposed to be temporary workers anyway) while increasing our active forces. The recent embassy attacks have turned the tables on any anti-military type of talk though. Obama might want to pick another battle.
Then those people don't know a damn thing about national security or how Embassy security is operated.
We are dependent, always, on the local military/police/law keeping force.
We should have never had an embassy in Libya, because it just had a revolution and basic services like police protection was available. We can't defend really any embassy we have unilaterally, expect maybe the one in Baghdad, but its not your average embassy, its the largest in the world.

You may be right, but we DID have an embassy in Libya. Either way, we screwed up.

??? What exactly would renting an apartment accomplish? The nonhomestead tax also applies to apartments, because it applies to ALL rental property.
Not only is the nonhomestead tax a tax on landlords and on those unable to buy a home, this tax also reduces the supply of rental housing and thus drives rents upward.
(1) The tax makes it more expensive to develop and operate rental property.
(2) Whenever a house goes on the market, the playing field is tilted in favor of owner-occupants because the house is more expensive for a landlord to buy.
